Prof. Darrell is on the faculty of the CS and EE Divisions of the EECS Department at UC Berkeley. He founded and co-leads Berkeley’s Berkeley Artificial Intelligence Research (BAIR) lab, the Berkeley DeepDrive (BDD) Industrial Consortia, and the BAIR Commons program.   He also was Faculty Director of the PATH research center at UC Berkeley from 2015-2021, and led the Vision group at the UC-affiliated International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley from 2008-2014. Prior to that, Prof. Darrell was on the faculty of the MIT EECS department from 1999-2008, where he directed the Vision Interface Group. He was a member of the research staff at Interval Research Corporation from 1996-1999, and received the S.M., and PhD. degrees from MIT in 1991 and 1996, respectively. He obtained the B.S.E. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1988. 

Darrell’s group develops algorithms for large-scale perceptual learning, including object and activity recognition and detection, for a variety of applications including autonomous vehicles, media search, and multimodal interaction with robots and mobile devices. His areas of interest include computer vision, machine learning, natural language processing, and perception-based human computer interfaces.

Jenn-Jier James Lien is a Professor at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), serving as the Vice Dean of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Chairman of the school-level Smart Sports Center. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, with research conducted at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute under Professor Takeo Kanade. Professor Lien specializes in deep learning for computer vision, face recognition, and robotics.

His career includes leading DARPA surveillance projects at Visionics, where he won the 2000 and 2002 FERET face recognition competitions. An experienced entrepreneur, he co-founded Visionatics and BroBri Vision, focusing on embedded surveillance and smart manufacturing. Currently, he leads the CrowdEyes team to build a 5G smart sports stadium and develops federated learning platforms for healthcare. His work is recognized through several best paper awards and significant research grants from DARPA and the NSTC.

Benjamin Yen (Member, IEEE) received his B.E. and Ph.D. degrees in mechatronics engineering from the University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand, in 2014 and 2022, respectively. From 2016 to 2022, he was a member of the Communication Acoustics Laboratory at the Acoustics Research Centre, University of Auckland. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Laboratory for Multimodal AI Framework, RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR), and concurrently serves as a Specially-Appointed Assistant Professor in the Nakadai Lab, Department of Systems and Control Engineering, School of Engineering, Institute of Science Tokyo. His research focuses on robot audition, drone audition for search-and-rescue and human–robot interaction. He received the 20th Kisoi Motohiro Award for Technical Achievement in 2024 for his work on drone and robot audition for search-and-rescue applications. His broader interests include audio and signal processing, multimodal perception, and machine learning for robotics. 

Robotics researcher and practical scholar working at the intersection of performing arts and engineering. Her areas of expertise include humanoid robots, human-robot interaction (HRI), and the development and control of musical performance robots. Her research particularly focuses on designing art-assistive robots capable of replicating human body movements and musical expression.

Her major projects include the development of the Waseda Anthropomorphic Saxophonist Robot and Waseda Conductor Robot. In recent years, she has presented her work at international conferences and in academic journals, while also exploring the expressive potential of robots in the performing arts.
