"It must be said that it is not the amount of information, nor the sophistication in Mathematics that alone can provide knowledge pertinent, but rather the ability to place knowledge in context."
Edgar Morin
About our Research Group: The BRIET Group
BRIET is a Portuguese acronym for Biblioteconomia = (Librarianship) Representação = (Representation), Interoperabilidade = (Interoperability); E-ciência = (E-science)and Tecnologia = (Technology)
But the group`s name is also a tribute to Suzanne Briet who was an important French documentalist and inspires our work with data management
Like Morin, I believe that the data just be transformed into information and generate Knowledge, If We Know the context of the data. The context is given by the information representation or in other words, by the metadata. So, my studies interest turns around the Knowledge Representation and Organization. Not only the metadata but also the construction of vocabularies to standardize the meanings of metadata.
