(Click to read the full article, but here's a great tip!) Teach students how to independently problem-solve if an issue arises at a station. Some problem-solve examples include “Googling it,” ask three peers, or having student “technology ambassadors” who can troubleshoot common issues.
A strategy that has its origins in differentiated instruction, the anchor activity allows students to review or extend the learning if they finish early or find they are otherwise waiting for more instruction. The key? It can't be busy work!
Something as simple as having students do a more thorough check of or reflection on their work is an easy option, as are technology options related to your content area (i.e. Khan Academy, MobyMax, Readtheory, etc.) Visit this website for some ideas for anchor activities.
Workshop models often use the power of individual or small group conferencing during independent work time.
Best practice (and almost every IEP) calls for ‘pre-teaching’ content knowledge, opportunities for additional time to absorb/recall information, and modifying the modes of instruction. Video instruction can flip the script!
