Digital citizenship

Digital Lessons and Resources

The purpose of this page is to provide resources for students in the Gresham Barlow School District to learn to be safe, responsible, and respectful users of technology. The courses on this site are aligned to Common Core State Standards and Oregon Department of Education library standards, both of which are aligned to the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the International Society of Technology Education (ISTE) standards.

To be safe, responsible, and respectful users of technology, students will learn about caring for devices, being a part of an online community, digital footprint, safety and security, cyberbullying, ethics and copyright, and information literacy. After completion of these lessons students will, through their regular use of technology, demonstrate their understanding.

Caring for Devices

Students learn how to manage their personal and public devices for longevity. Teachers play an important role in setting up systems and procedures when devices are shared or managed by individual students.

Online Community

Students will understand that they are a citizen of a digital community that is impacted by their actions.

Digital Footprint

Students learn that their online actions have real-life implications. Developing a positive online presence early will support and enhance their digital identity. Teachers will role model appropriate online behavior.

Safety and Security

Students learn strategies for protecting, managing and keeping their personal information safe and secure. Teachers will evaluate digital resources for privacy policies and terms of use (COPPA, CIPA, FERPA compliance) and will model safe and secure internet usage.

Cyberbullying

Students will learn to recognize cyberbullying and feel empowered to take action. Teachers will demonstrate, facilitate, and model positive interactions in an online community.

Ethics and Copyright

Teachers and students will consume, create, and share intellectual property ethically and legally.

Information Literacy

Students will effectively search for and locate valid and reliable sources to learn and share information with a wider audience. Teachers will guide students through a research/inquiry based-process, allowing for choice of topic and student reflection.
