The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.
Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
There is a required annual $15 membership fee
(must be paid by Oct. 15th 2024)
Fees can be paid online, or at the bookkeeper's office directly
Fees will cover costs for a senior cord, t-shirt, in-chapter activities, annual membership affiliation fee with the national office, end-of-year celebrations, and any additional expenses that arise throughout the year
(If there is any hardship in paying this fee, please do not hesitate to reach out to Ms. Tran for assistance)
Scholarship: Students must be continuously enrolled in 6 graded courses throughout the school year to qualify for and retain membership: pre-approval necessary for special circumstances (such as taking classes at a college).
Any issue with academic honesty will result in immediate termination of your membership.
Members must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher throughout both junior and senior years. After final grades are posted no exceptions will be made.
Seniors who do not meet the 3.5 GPA criteria at the 12-week grading period in the spring semester will not receive a cord for graduation.
Leadership: Members must exhibit ongoing leadership in school and out in the community.
Each member must initiate or organize a Leadership Project each year of membership. The project idea must be proposed 3 weeks, and approved (by Ms. Tran) 2 weeks, prior to the date of service.
(Date of completion for Seniors is March 30th; Juniors is April 15th)
A collaborative (up to 2 members) opportunity is acceptable.
The project must need at least 3 more members to help complete.
Learn more about these projects in the Leadership Project Tab.
Character: Members are expected to be model students and exemplary citizens within the community.
Uphold school conduct and academic policies
Members must demonstrate maturity, sensitivity, ethical/moral values, sportsmanship, and
above all -- integrity and
compassion.
Service: Each member is required to perform 10 IN-chapter hours and 15 OUT-of-chapter hours
Pre-approval by the adviser and/or faculty council is necessary for certain circumstances.
In-chapter hours are offered by NHS: during meetings, posts on our social media, Canvas, or sent via email
Out-of-chapter hours require members to seek their own opportunities, which must be pre-approved by the adviser
Extra IN-chapter hours may be used as OUT-of-chapter hours. The reverse of this is NOT acceptable.
Members can only count up to 3 hours in each volunteer activity.
All members are required to participate in both of the Whole Chapter Community Service events (Oct & March)
NOTE: These events’ hours DO NOT count toward the 25 IN and OUT-OF chapter service hours.
When a member signed up and didn't go to the service activity, they should receive these disciplinary steps:
For the 1st absence, a Warning;
For the 2nd absence, a requirement to do an extra IN-Chapter hour immediately, which is an addition to the required 10 IN hours.
Meetings occur every other Tuesday, during lunchtime in Room 123. Any changes will be announced on Instagram, Canvas, and via messages from your buddy officer
Meetings begin exactly 5 minutes into the lunch period - @ 11:20. Please be prompt, because our time is so limited.
80% attendance to meetings is required to maintain membership. (13 out of the 16 meetings)
Members can only miss 3 total in the entire school year; CAL students, A.M. and P.M., are held to equivalent attendance requirements. Exceptions can be discussed with Ms.Tran PRIOR to missing a meeting.
All members must attend both whole Chapter Community Service Days (Fall & Spring)
