The image above is an example of how you should organize your chromosome pairs on the blank piece of paper. Note that this example is of a normal chromosomal count, whereas you will have a chromosomal disorder and will therefore be missing a chromosome or have an extra one.
Karyotype Activity - Find your Chromosomal Disorder
Karyotype Activity - Find your Chromosomal Disorder
- Pair UP. You will need one blank piece of non-lined paper for this activity. Go to the paper cabinet if you need paper.
- Receive one of the chromosome spreads in class from the teacher.
- Write down the letter at top center of your blank sheet of paper.
- Now you need to cut out and match your chromosomes to discover what disorder you have in your spread. Each ban on the pair of chromosomes should match identically. Be sure to keep the numbers/letters with the chromosomes that have them when you cut them out.
- You will discover which chromosomal disorder you have by Googling the situation: "Disorder where you have an extra 21 chromosome"
Homework Assignment Due By Next Class Period: Write a paragraph about your disorder. Include the following: 1. a description of the disorder - in other words what issues does someone with this disorder have. 2. life expectancy 3. Any treatments or therapies used to mitigate issues caused by the disorder. 4. Any other information important to someone who might have a family member with the disorder.
