5th GRADE MOUTHPIECE TESTING INFO

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I join band? Put band in your elective selection form and come to mouthpiece testing.

Where do we go? Bus Loop entrance (back left corner as you're looking at the front of the school). We will put out signs to follow!

What is mouthpiece testing? Students get to spend some time trying every instrument in the band with a professional and picking the instrument that's right for them.

How long does a mouthpiece testing take? Depending on how much time your child wants to spend on each instrument, around 1-1.5 hours.

Does everyone need to come to mouthpiece testing? Every student will need to complete mouthpiece testing prior to the start of school next year. Only one parent needs to be present.

Why is this so early? At HMS, we set up beginning band classes based on what instrument group they play. Guidance counselors need to know what instrument they will play so they can set their schedule.

My child hasn't played an instrument before and can't read music. Is that okay? Absolutely! We start beginning band assuming no prior musical knowledge. Piano experience is preferred for students wishing to play percussion, but not required.

Does it matter which session we attend? Nope! We go through the same process in each mouthpiece testing session. Some instruments sections do "fill up" early, so the earlier the better.

What if I cannot attend any of the mouthpiece testing sessions? If you're unable to attend any of the sessions, please send us an email ASAP.  We will work something out. Don't worry...any child that wants to join band will be able to!
