Throughout the school year, our Kindergarten students learn all about the Rules of the Art Classroom. They are introduced to different Art Materials, such as markers, scissors, paint, and glue. Students are also taught about Art Room safety. In Kindergarten, students begin to learn about the 7 Elements of Art, which are the foundation of art making. In K5, students focus on learning about Lines, Shapes, Colors and Texture. Students also begin to learn about movement and emotions, and how to express those things in their artwork. They learn how to use all of these things, to begin to express their ideas in different ways.
Our 1st Graders always start the year by revisiting the basics, such as line, shape, color, and texture. They continue to learn about the all of the things available in the Art classroom, and practice art making at a higher level than in K5. Students begin to become familiar with how shapes become forms, by using extra lines to create depth and distance, and the illusion of 3D, in their artwork. In 1st grade, the students are tasked with more complex ideas, drawings, and projects, to enhance and build on existing art making skills. They create Art from Literature, add descriptive backgrounds to all of their drawings, make paper sculptures, and practice skills such as drawing, cutting, and building.
Our 2nd graders start the year by practicing and then demonstrating each of the 7 Elements of Art. This is when they begin to grasp how the 7 Elements of Art work together in the creation of Art. Second grade students
