ABSENCES
Students are allowed 10 absences during the school year (5 per semester) that can be covered by parent notes. The parent notes need to have the student’s first and last name, date of absence, reason for absence, and parent/guardian name and signature. The parent/guardian can submit these excuses through our Absence Excuse Form (link below) or the student may bring in their note to the Attendance office.
All absence excuse notes (medical, parent, legal, etc.) need to be submitted within 2 days of the absence.
Students are considered absent for a single class period if they are not in attendance for at least half the length of the class.
Students receive a full day absence if they are not present for at least half of the school day.
EARLY DISMISSALS
There are 2 ways parents/guardians can submit an early dismissal request for their student:
They can send a note with their student to turn in to the Attendance office on their way to 1st block. The note needs to have the first and last name of the student, the time of the dismissal, parent/guardian name and contact number. I will call the parent/guardian to verify the dismissal.
Another option for parents/guardians to submit early dismissals is through the Early Dismissal Form (link below). Dismissals through this form are to be submitted by 10:00am to allow time for processing. A copy of the parent/guardian's ID is required to be uploaded with this form for verification. I will also call you for confirmation before dismissing your student.
As your student is leaving for their dismissal, they will need to stop by either the Attendance office or the Welcome Center (front office) to sign out by scanning their school ID.
If a form or note is not received, parents/guardians will need to come to the Welcome Center with their ID to sign their student out.
TARDY POLICY
Students are marked tardy if they are not in their classroom by the time the late bell rings.
Morning Schedule
7:45am - Commons doors open for students.
8:30am - Students are released from the Commons to go to class.
8:40am - 5 minute warning bell for students to get to class.
8:45am - Tardy bell. Students are tardy if they are not in their classrooms by the time this bell rings.
Students who are tardy at the start of school (come in at 8:45am or later) will need to enter the building through the Welcome Center (front office). They will then be directed to the Attendance office where they will need to scan their ID badge to receive a tardy pass to class.
Tardy Consequences:
1-3 Tardies: Warning/Conference
4-5 Tardies: After School Detention & Parent Contact
6-7 Tardies: Detention or ISS
8+ Tardies: ISS Multiple Days or OSS
TRUANCY
S.C. Compulsory School Attendance Law: Section 59-65-10 of S.C. Code of Laws - All parents or guardians are required to cause their children to regularly attend a public or private school or other program which has been approved by the State Board of Education beginning at age five (5) and continuing until their 17th birthday.
Students are considered truant if they have 3 consecutive unexcused absences or 5 total unexcused absences in a school year.
You can help prevent your student from becoming truant by submitting absence excuse notes within the 2-day timeframe of the absence.
If your student becomes truant, you will receive an automated phone call from Parent Backpack. I will also call to discuss with you and set up a meeting with your student to conduct an Attendance Intervention Plan. If absences continue after the intervention plan, the student will be referred to a district level attendance supervisor.
