Syllabus / Class Expectations
Academic Seminar classes' main goals are to assist students in academic success towards gaining high school credits for graduation while meeting IEP goals. This means that each student in my class has a different course of study, and it is catered to their needs to meet IEP goals, increase learning, and to grow. Graded assignments for my class are based on domains that assist students in getting better skills for the general education along with transition skills (basically learning about adulting-such as job interest, finance, and post-secondary options)
What to bring to class?
Students should bring their assigned chrome books, pen or pencil, and any assignments that they need to do or complete. We will work with some organization strategies and may add a binder or folder as needed. I have calculators, but if a student has a preferred one, he or she should bring it.
Make-up work.
My intent is for students to be able to focus on a general education assignments first in order to meet deadlines for those classes. If a student has to use Academic Seminar class time to do this, this is OK and encouraged. That student may be responsible to make-up my assignments or the work done for the other teachers could substitute as a grade for Mr. King's class; this is a case-by-case decision of mine. Due to this, there are no late penalties, as long as the student is showing effort to get work done in any class. Students can make-up work marked "missing" as long as it is done by the end of the grading term. I cannot extend the end of the grading term (nine weeks). If a student has a 0 from choosing not to do work (this can be behavioral, sleeping, or refusing), I will mark the reason on the grade. Even then, each student can make-up one of those per quarter, as long as the student talks to me about why they were off that day and what they could do better next time.
