Hello all! My name is Julie Summey. I graduated from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC with my Bachelors of Music Education in 1990 and my Masters of Music Education in 1991. This is my 2nd year at Ellen Woodside Elementary/Riley Center and I am so excited to be here! I previously taught music at Greenbrier Elementary for 1 year and band at Bryson Middle School for 21 years. I started my teaching career in Bishopville, SC where I taught middle and high school band for three years.
I have two wonderful adult children. My oldest is an App State graduate with a music degree and is currently a graduate student at Furman University. My youngest is a also an App State graduate as well as a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts with a degree in film scoring (writing music for movies). I guess you could say music and App State definitely runs in the family. (My late husband was an App State alum as well.) In fact, we were the 2017 Appalachian State University Family of the Year!
We love animals in our family and have 4 cats bewteen us all! They are not all in the same house, but they are all family. The cats are Teddy (6 years old), brother and sister Dash and Violet (1 year old) and Leonard Purrnstein, Leo for short (1 year old).
When I get free time, I love to spend time with my family, read, listen to music, and watch TV/movies. My music choices are varied. I like just about all styles. Some more than others, but I appreciate good music of any kind. I absolutely love Broadway musicals and can be found at the Peace Center regularly. Motown and '80's music are my two main go to styles in the popular music genre. The love of music is something I hope to instill in my students. When it comes to books and movies, I am very much a nerd. I love science fiction and fantasy. I am a HUGE fan of Harry Potter (I am a Hufflepuff), Doctor Who (10 and 15 are my favorites), DISNEY, Marvel, and Star Wars. :)
