Elementary Music Syllabus

In the Sterling music class we will learn how to sing, play instruments, explore movement, and create our own music so that we can understand how music makes a difference in our lives.

Learning and developmental goals are based on South Carolina and National Standards for Music Education:

Standard 1: Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music

Standard 2: Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.

Standard 3: Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments.

Standard 4: Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines.

Standard 5: Reading and notating music

Standard 6: Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.

Standard 7: Evaluating music and music performances.

Standard 8: Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.

Standard 9: Understanding music in relation to history and culture.

Grading Procedures: District Wide Policy

Active Participation: 80% 1 grade per class section

The following may be included within this category: students' on-task attention, following directions, work with other students, taking care of materials/instruments, wise use of time on projects, minor quizzes or projects, homework or required outside activities.

Standards-Based Assessments: 20% 2 per grading period

Included within this category are larger or more formal standards-based projects or performances, portfolios or group-based activities based on rubrics or established guidelines within the discipline.

Students in Grades 2-5:

Q= Quality Performance - exceeds expectations 90-100

M = Meets Standards Most of the Time 80-89

P = Progressing towards the standards 70-79

L= Little or no progress towards the standards 60-69

Students in Kindergarten and Grade 1:

M= meets expectation

P= progressing/does not meet expectation

Procedures for Non-Instructional Routines:

Students enter the room orderly and quietly and follow teacher's instructions for seating. K-3 grade students are assigned seats on a square of the music rug in the center of the room. 4-5 grade students are assigned seats in chairs.. Bookbags/lunch boxes, etc. are stored outside the music room against the wall. Students are responsible for getting and returning their own books from the bookshelf. Students are allowed to go to the restroom or nurse only in cases of an emergency and required to take a music room pass when they leave the room.
