What Every Student Should Know about WBL

Work-Based Learning is an opportunity to work, part-time and paid, for one of Donaldson's local business partners while still in school.

Differences between Co-ops, Internships, and Apprenticeships (and who can apply)

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT Internships - offered through LaunchGVL, which is a partnership between the Greenville Chamber of Commerce and local businesses that allows students from DCC or its feeder schools (SHS, GSHA, GEC, WHS) to work flexibly-scheduled, paid, part-time jobs that fit with their school schedule. For DCC, if it aligns with your program and your instructor recommends it, you may go to your job during your regular class time in addition to any outside hours. Internship recruitment occurs for Fall, Spring and Summer, and the opportunities at www.LaunchGVL.org are available to any qualified applicant (see "Requirements to participate").

DONALDSON CAREER CENTER Co-ops - offered to DCC students, these are ongoing partnerships with local business and DCC. The WBL Coordinator and/or your instructor will have knowledge about how to apply with our company partners. These are similar in that they are paid, part-time jobs that fit with your schedule.

APPRENTICESHIPS - available through company-specific programs, these often have other qualifying needs, such as additional testing. Recruitment for these will be announced as opportunities arise each semester.

WBL Student Requirements

In order to participate in work-based learning, you must...

  • Be a junior or senior at one of DCC's feeder schools (SHS, WHS, GSHA, GEC)

  • Have good attendance (no more than 5 unexcused absences or tardies the year of co-op)

  • Have good behavior (no major behavioral problems on record)

  • Have passing grades in all high school courses, and DCC students must have an 80+ in their program of study

  • Have your instructor's recommendation (DCC students)

  • Have your own/reliable transportation

  • Ensure that your IGP's stated career goals align with the job for which you want to work

Q&A

What if I want to work somewhere we don't have a partnership?

Contact your WBLC, Stella Grove, with the name and contact and I will try to reach out to see if we can onboard them!

Do I get credit?

Yes!

High school students participating in LaunchGVL get CCR (College and Career Readiness credential), which is required to graduate in Greenville County Schools.

Second year students at DCC will be able to earn their course's credit by being at their WBL job instead of class (though you will still be in class some of the week, and responsible for your learning).

Third year DCC students can earn an additional 1-credit Work-Based Learning credit.

When can I work?

High school students - after school and on weekends

DCC 2nd year - usually 2-3 days/week, varies depending on program

DCC 3rd year - you can work up to four days a week, any hours as your HS schedule allows it, with the fifth day reserved as a check in day at DCC. Most schedules look like this: WBL Mon-Thur. & DCC for check in on Friday (regardless of your actual schedule) - i.e. if you are not scheduled to work that day, but are WBL, you do not have to go to DCC that day (bc you probably worked longer hours another day).

Can I count the job I have already?

Maybe. You can talk with your counselor/WBL Coordinator, but essentially, the job MUST align with the career goals stated on your IGP in order to count as WBL. You also must accrue a minimum of 40 hours for the entire work-based learning experience, and your workplace & supervisor must be vetted and onboarded, with your supervisor being required to complete an evaluation of your performance.

How Do I Apply?!

Talk to your instructor / high school career counselor about it, letting them know if there is a particular business for which you are interested. You may also ask me, Mrs. Grove, your Work-Based Learning Coordinator, as I can check requirements and possibilities, and get you an application if all works, but remember that the biggest key to getting placed in WBL is getting your instructor's recommendation!
