Course Description:
Spanish 1 is designed to introduce students to the language and to provide them with a foundation of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation abilities upon which they will build in future levels of study. The World Languages department utilizes unit and lesson plans created at the state level to guide daily activities and assessments in the classroom. Our main focuses are the 5 Cs: Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. The units are designed around a central theme and include content specific vocabulary and grammar associated with those themes so that the students will encounter new information in a real-life scenario. Three styles of assessment will be utilized to measure the students’ growing knowledge: Interpretive (reading or listening activities), Interpersonal (speaking a partner or small group), and Presentational (written tests, written papers, verbal presentations, etc).
Required Materials:
· Charged Chromebook
· Pencils
· Paper
Class Expectations:
Learning a foreign language has many rewards and can be a lot fun, but it also takes great effort. I have high expectations for all students. I expect the following:
1. Be respectful of other people and their belongings.
→ Don’t touch anything that doesn’t belong to you without permission, including things that stay in the classroom.
2. Cell phones, headphones, and other non-district-issued electronics are not allowed during class time.
3. Use academically appropriate language.
4. Respect the seating chart. Stay in assigned seat unless instructed otherwise.
5. Assume it's for a grade.
Consequences
First Offense: Verbal warning
Second Offense: 100 sentence punitive assignment due by the next class period
If the punitive assignment is not completed, a referral will be written.
Third Offense: Parent Contact
Fourth Offense: Referral
Grading Plan:
The district grading scale is as follows:
A = 90-100
B = 89-80
C = 79-70
D = 69-60
F = 59 or below
NewTech
Knowledge and Thinking 70%
Written Communication 10%
Oral Communication 10%
Collaboration 10%
Extra Assistance Policy:
Students who receive assistance outside of class must be demonstrating effort in the classroom, because tutoring is not a substitute for paying attention and studying. I am available before school most mornings. If our schedules conflict, please contact me to arrange a more convenient time. Please let me know in advance if you plan to stay after school.
This course is part of the Power of M initiative, a program designed to assist students in mastering the standards and objectives of a course through targeted assessment and remediation. Students who fail to make a 70 on any major assessment will remediate with their teacher and then retake the assessment. Additional cycles of remediation and retesting may continue until the student scores the minimum grade of 70. The grade book will reflect a score of 1 until the test mastery score is achieved.
