Meet Mrs. Snider

Why I do what I do...

As a child, I imagined being a tour guide for field trips. In about middle school I shifted my focus toward counseling. In my senior year of high school, I realized that my guidance counselors were more effective when they were aware of students' lives in the classroom as well as in the office. So then I had a choice to make: I could go into accounting like my mother did and hope that I could run a business that helped people, or I could help teenagers on the "front lines" of the classroom as a teacher and mentor. I may or may not pursue a Master's degree in counseling later on, but right now I see an immediate need that high school students need encouragement, compassion, and the tools to build self-confidence both socially and academically. I am here to challenge students to achieve more than they thought they could, learn in different ways, and express their knowledge of the world. I am also here to facilitate their learning with helpful resources, show how collaboration can improve their perspective, and provide support along the way.

Education

I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics Teaching from Clemson University. Apart from my required studies, my college experience involved quick study abroad trips, volunteering with various organizations, and tutoring students in alternative schools. This is my 2nd year teaching at Carolina High School.

Activities

I am often available to tutor for Algebra 1 and assist students in completing their assignments for Quantitative Thinking after school. If you wish to stay after school with me, please discuss your plans with me a few days in advance so that I can make arrangements. I can occasionally provide assistance in the morning before school as well with advance notice.

Interested in joining or assisting SGA (Student Government)? I am an SGA adviser and I would love to discuss options with you!

Outside of school, I enjoy kayaking, spending time outdoors, and weeding gardens. I am much better at removing unwanted plants than helping them grow! Although I am not exactly athletically-coordinated, I enjoy playing an occasional game of soccer or indoor softball. I like trying crafts like sewing, coloring, and painting, but they usually last about 2-3 weeks before I am on to something else.

Personal

I grew up in the northern part of Spartanburg, SC, just 20 minutes from Tryon, NC. It is a rural/suburban area so for "Farmer Day" during Spirit Week in high school, I learned to drive my dad's tractor to school. My parents own a mechanic shop & small towing company called Ward Motor Company and we lived in an old house (nearly 100 years old) on the outskirts of town. Although I live a couple miles from downtown Greenville now, I like to visit my parents every few weeks.

My husband, Jared, is a software engineer in Spartanburg. We met in high school and started dating after graduation and through college. When students ask if we have any kids, I tell them that adopting 150 each year is quite enough for now!
