2026 Instrument Unit

4th & 5th Grade Students

Dear PRES parents,

Hello! A quick note from the music teachers at Pelham Rd., Mrs. Beckmann and Ms. Bright (Mondays).  Students in 4th and 5th grades will begin an instrument unit in music class. We will alternate learning both the recorder and ukulele this fall. Every student will be provided with all materials needed, including ukuleles and recorders (sanitized between uses) to play in music class. School owned instruments will only be available during music class and will not be allowed to be taken home.

If your child is interested in having their own personal ukulele or recorder, you are more than welcome to purchase one for them. There are many places to purchase these instruments now, but below are some places I strongly recommend if purchasing a personal one for your child. I also recommend getting the same or similar brand as the ones we will use in the classroom so that problems can be solved easier and so they will all have a similar sound when playing together.

Ukulele

• Brand:  Makala Soprano Ukulele (Makala Dolphin MK-SD) ~ $60

• Recommended stores or websites:

• Pecknel Music:

  • 1312 N. Pleasantburg Drive, Greenville, SC 29607

• Amazon.com

Recorder

• Brand:  Yamaha Soprano Recorder ~ $8.99

• Recommended stores or websites:

• Pecknel Music:

Again, purchasing a personal instrument is optional as one will be available for your child in class. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask! You can reach me at sbeckmann@greenville.k12.sc.us.

Sincerely,

Sarah Beckmann
