Technology Proficiency Certification and Renewal Information

*Technology Proficiency Technology Proficiency is not tied to certificate renewal.*

All full-time personnel who maintain a Professional Teaching Certificate need to obtain and maintain technology proficiency in accordance with South Carolina State Proviso 1A.20. Administrators and non-certified personnel are exempt.

These 30 hours can be ANY type of technology workshop or technology integrated workshop offered at the school or district (PowerTeacher, Software Training, Promethean Training, etc). Initial Technology Proficiency Certification

Currently there are multiple courses which have been approved and meet the requirements set forth by Greenville County Schools for initial technology proficiency.

A.L.I.V.E. | Register

Offered face-to-face at multiple Greenville County Schools locations each fall, spring, and summer

Participants will learn the value of creating authentic assessments, designing effective lesson plans, and aligning technology tools with subject area content and state standards. An emphasis will be placed on a variety of skills and strategies including:

  • student engagement with Promethean ActivInspire software
  • project-based learning with menus and choice boards
  • student communication and creation of content through blogging
  • student creativity using Web 2.0 tools
  • effective unit planning integrating a variety of technology tools

In this course, teachers see how assessment strategies can benefit their teaching practices and their students' learning. They learn how to plan, develop, and manage student-centered assessment. They follow three teachers and see how the three teachers are implementing embedded and ongoing assessment methods in their classrooms. The course offers opportunities to apply the assessment concepts with action planning exercises. Direct connections to state standards are provided throughout the course and can be connected within the final project as appropriate.

Intel 2 Online | Register

Offered in a blended learning format with two onsite meetings and eight online sessions each fall, spring, and summer

Teacher participants learn how to integrate foundational digital tools such as blogging, podcasting, wikis, and collaborative productivity tools into student instruction.

Intel Elements: Collaboration in the Digital Classroom | Register

Offered exclusively online through the SC State Department of Education on a rotating basis

Collaboration in the Digital Classroom is an interactive e-learning experience that offers an in-depth look at collaboration with a focus on online collaborative tools. In this course, teachers see how collaboration helps students develop 21st-century thinking skills, deepen content understanding, and prepare them for the global world. Teachers learn how to plan and manage collaboration activities that integrate online collaborative tools increasingly part of our globally connected workplaces. They follow two teachers as they implement collaborative experiences in their classrooms.

21st Century Teacher: Authentic Assessment | Register

Teachers explore the characteristics and benefits of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in 21st-century classrooms. Throughout the course, teachers consider their own teaching practice as they follow a teacher new to project-based learning in dialogue with a mentor teacher; they review their current integration of ICT and consider methods to further develop this in the future. Planning and project design modules guide teachers through organizing the curriculum, the classroom, and students for successful 21st-century projects. The assessment module demonstrates strategies for assessing students’ 21st-century skills throughout an open-ended project. The course offers opportunities to apply ICT integration and PBL concepts with action planning exercises.

JumpStart: A Technology Course for Thoughtful Educators | Register

Offered exclusively in collaboration with Cult of Pedagogy each fall, spring, and summer

  • Registration Dates: August 27 - September 3, 2019 until 4:30 P.M. or the class is full.
  • Course Dates: September 9 - November 25, 2019

JumpStart is an advanced, self-paced online technology course for the thoughtful educator. By guiding you through a series of hands-on projects, this course will give you the confidence and skills you need to make smart choices about the technology you use in your teaching. Please note that JumpStart is not a beginner course; it is designed for the intermediate or advanced user of technology.

In this course, you will learn 10 key processes that can have an incredible impact on how you teach, how your students learn, how you collaborate and communicate with others, and the time it takes to do it all. After you learn each process and how it can enhance your classroom work, you’ll complete a hands-on project to practice that process with one tool. As you finish each module, you’ll be able to transfer that process to your own classroom, using the same tool or another one of your choosing.

This course explains and demonstrates blended learning with interactive activities and locally relevant classroom examples. The course helps teachers transition to blended learning experiences and provides the background rationale, planning strategies, and suggested technology tools. It offers suggestions for assessing student learning in a blended course and managing the day-to-day blended environment.

Technology Certification Renewal Information

Teachers must submit 30 hours of documentation of tech proficiency every 5 years by participating in sessions or attending workshops/conferences that teach or train on the use of technology in order to enhance student learning. Please see the current district workshops and classes and the GCSD's PD portal.

Technology Proficiency Renewal and Directions on Submitting Documentation

What will I need?

Determine if you are requesting initial technology proficiency or technology proficiency renewal. Please note that if you select “technology proficiency renewal” and we do not have documentation that you have completed initial technology proficiency, you will be asked to provide that documentation prior to renewing.

If you are submitting your request for initial technology proficiency, you will need a digital copy of your certificate of completion from the approved course (Intel, ALIVE, JumpStart, Intel Elements or other approved class). You will also need to have your employee number and certificate number available.

If you are submitting your request for technology proficiency renewal, you will need a digital copy of your Professional Development record (MY PD on the district Portal) with at least 30 hours/points of technology courses highlighted. You will also need to have your employee number and certificate number available.

New Submission Process

Beginning in 2018-2019, Mauldin High School will submit documentation for their Technology Proficiency Renewal (or for their Initial Technology Proficiency) through a Google Form! Click on this link and complete the form when it's time to renew: Tech Proficiency Documentation Submission

How do I submit my information?

For the Technology Documentation Form, you will need the following information:

Employee number and your teaching certificate number (6 digits).

Your documentation can be an attachment from Microsoft Word or from Google Drive Docs. To submit credit from the portal:

Copy and paste all points/credits from My PD on the Portal onto a blank Microsoft Word document or Google Doc.

2. If using Word, you will need to select the entire table and under the Layout tab, choose AutoFit Contents.

3. Using the Highlighter Tool in Microsoft Word or Google Docs, highlight all technology workshops you are requesting to count towards your proficiency renewal.

4. Once you have saved all changes to your document, upload the file below for review.
