Course Description and Goals for English 3 CP
Through this course, students will become analytical readers, thinkers, and writers in all academic and community settings. These skills will prepare them to be thoughtful, successful citizens. Students will utilize a variety of skills as a means to establish themselves in their communities of choice - college, workplace, military, vocational training, etc.
Students will develop their reading, writing, analytical, and grammatical skills through participation in activities, projects, readings, and writings. Students will demonstrate their mastery of the South Carolina Standards. Each student will cultivate his or her literary skills while being an active member of the learning community at Hillcrest High School. My philosophy entails that through this process students will become more competent and thoughtful citizens.
Instructional Philosophy
My classroom has high expectations for ALL students. Students will be guided and encouraged to strive each day to share their knowledge and insights. I want to empower our classroom by ensuring that each student has a voice that is heard, is given high expectations, and is provided full support.
Course Reading Texts Students may read one or more of the following major works: The Scarlet Letter, The Crucible, Of Mice and Men, The Great Gatsby as well as student-selected books. HHS Reading List
Materials
Students are expected to bring the following materials to class every day.
Fully charged Chromebook, binder, notebook paper, tabs for 5 sections, earbuds for your Chromebook (they are $1 at Dollar Tree), writing utensil, and any necessary reading materials.
Attendance and Tardiness
When we are in school, you are expected to attend class regularly and to be on time. Please see the Hillcrest High School Student Handbook for the tardy and attendance policy.
Grading Policy, Homework, & Make-Up Work
The majority of assignments each week will be completed in class. If you are absent the assignment will be posted and turned in on Google Classroom. It will be imperative that you check your Google Classroom and your school email daily. That is how most communication will be done. Homework is typically only given when the assignment is not finished in class.
Due dates must be adhered to in order to stay current in class.
Late Work Policy for Majors and Minors:
10 points will be deducted from the student's grade each day for up to five school days from the assignment’s due date. Minor assignments have a 5 day time limit. After the fifth school day, minor late work will not be accepted.
It is the students responsibility to make up assignments when they are absent, and assignment grades will be 0 until the work is made up.
Grading Scale
90-100 A 80-89 B
70-79 C 60-69 D
59-and below F
Grade Weights
60% Major Grades: Tests, final essay drafts, major projects
40% Minor Grades: Quizzes, informal writing assignments, vocabulary, classwork, and journal responses.
Class Expectations & Behavior
The purpose of English 3 is to foster the reading and writing skills students need to succeed in school and life beyond. In general, any behavior that prevents another student from improving these skills will be addressed. The HHS rules and regulations will be enforced; students are expected to adhere to the following rule: Students are expected to be respectful to fellow students, instructors, and class materials. Remember we are in a learning environment.
When we are in school, you need to have your ID on at all times. No cell phones should be visible in class from Bell to Bell per the District-wide Cell Phone policy.
Honor Code
Students are expected to follow the HHS Honor Code: "Hillcrest High School expects all students to be honest in academic matters. Hillcrest High School students are required to refrain from all forms of academic dishonesty: cheating, plagiarizing, lying, and other forms of trickery”. Assignments that are plagiarized in any form may receive a 0.
