Greenville County Students may take online courses to supplement their regular school schedule through two online programs (GCVSP and VIRTUAL SC). Greenville County Virtual School Program (GCVSP) is a district-sponsored supplemental online program serving GCS students in grades 7 through 12 since 2012. VIRTUAL SC is a state-sponsored supplemental online program that offers courses to students across the state in grades 9 through 12. Both are considered "programs", not schools, and students cannot attend full time. Both are a resource for supplementing educational opportunities for students. Students can take one or two courses to supplement the curriculum they are taking at the regular school in which they are enrolled. Most courses are HIGH SCHOOL courses; most are semester-length and governed by High School Grading Rules and the SC Uniform Grading Policy. All are approved by the NCAA. All require a final exam that counts a percentage of the final grade, although final exams differ between the programs. GCVSP final exams are project-based so they are not face-to-face and do not require a proctored session. VIRTUAL SC exams are at the end of the course and require a face-to-face proctored session. Every online class has a published start and end date, and classes are not self-paced; they are asynchronous and deadline driven. GCVSP and VIRTUAL SC classes are free to students with the exception that, in summer term, GCVSP classes require a fee.
GCVSP and VIRTUAL SC offer rigorous online courses aligned to state standards that are created and taught by highly qualified, SC high school certified teachers who have earned credentials in online instruction. Students complete lesson activities, homework, research, projects, class discussions, and tests. Teachers are available to students throughout the entire length of the course. The primary difference between virtual classes and classes in a brick/mortar school is that the online course activities happen over the internet so students have access 24/7 and can manage their own activity in the course. This requires students have access to a working computer, or device such as a Chromebook, and an internet connection.
Virtual School Enrollment Steps for Summer 2022
Students seriously interested in pursuing enrollment in either the Greenville County Virtual School Program or the VirtualSC Program over the summer, should carefully review the course offerings in each program (GCVSP and Virtual SC) as the courses and levels offered can be different. After deciding on the specific program, the student is to follow the steps provided for enrollment in the document on the left and complete the application form linked above or in the document to the left. The same form is available in both places for easy access.
Virtual SC final exams will be proctored at Riverside Middle School between August 2-4 and students must attend in person. Specific dates and times will be provided to students requesting summer classes.
