School Counseling
All students should know their school counselors and are encouraged to communicate with them via email, and/or in person. The primary purpose of the school counseling program at Riverside High School is to help each student discover the potential for personal and academic success. The members of the school counseling staff work with this continuing process, concerning themselves with the educational, vocational, personal, and social concerns of the students. The services of Riverside High School's counseling department are available for all students, and each student is encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity.

Schedule Corrections
Creating a master schedule is a long and time-consuming process that takes many factors into account. Returning students are given until the end of April to make changes to the courses they are requesting for the next school year. For this reason, schedule corrections can only be requested for the following reasons:
● Student has already earned a credit for a course they are currently enrolled in
● Student has a hole (missing class) in their schedule
● The student should be in the credit recovery lab
● The student is enrolled in a course they previously failed with the same teacher
● The student is missing a course needed for promotion.
Students requesting a schedule correction must pick up a “Schedule Change Request Form” from the school counseling office. This form must be returned and requests must be completed by the 5th day of school. Students are not to enter or start in a changed or new class until he/she has been issued a new schedule from the school counseling office.
Withdrawal from Class
Students and parents need to choose courses carefully. Students will not be allowed to withdraw from a class unless one of the school’s established conditions applies. Students who withdraw after five days in a 90-day course, or ten days in a 180-day course will be assigned a WF, and the F (as a 50) will be calculated in the student’s overall grade point average. The grade of FA (failure due to attendance) will carry no Carnegie units and will be factored into the GPA as a 50 with no quality points. Students who drop out of school or are expelled after the allowed period will be assigned grades in accordance with the following policies:
● The student will receive a WP if they were passing the course. The grade of WP will carry no Carnegie units and no quality points will be factored into the student’s GPA.
● The student will receive a WF if they were failing the course. The grade of WF will carry no Carnegie units but will be factored into the student’s GPA as a 61.
● If a student earns a D or F in a course, the course may be retaken no later than the next academic year. Both grades will be calculated into the student’s GPA. If a student retakes a course after making a D, only one unit of credit will be awarded.
Parent Overrides
Parents and students are highly cautioned in the use of override forms. If a parent overrides a teacher recommendation and the student begins to experience difficulty in the class once scheduled, the student will not be removed to the original teacher-recommended level.
Address Changes
The school should be notified immediately of any changes in personal data including address, phone number, and emergency contacts. Please contact the school counseling office with any changes or updates.
Step-Parent Access to the Student and Student Records
In order for a step-parent or other non-custodial caregiver to access student information and have contact with teachers, a Consent of Access Form must be completed and on file. The form must be completed in the school counseling office by the natural parent or legal guardian with proper identification.
SAT and ACT Reminders as Related to Scholarships and Records
College-bound students are encouraged to begin taking college admissions tests no later than the spring of their junior year. When students register for the test, the student must include the Riverside High School code (CEEB Code) 410951 This ensures that Riverside High School receives a copy of the score report to maintain adequate records, to determine scholarship eligibility, and to determine honors and awards.
Fee Waivers
To receive a fee waiver, students must qualify by meeting federal income guidelines. Fee waivers may be used to pay the registration fee for administration of the SAT and ACT, NCAA Eligibility Center Registration, and one CSS/Financial Aid Profile application. Fee waivers are open to all qualified students. Students who qualify may only receive two fee waivers for the SAT and two fee waivers for the ACT.
Student-Athletes
Students planning on playing sports in college must register through the NCAA Eligibility Center. The center will determine if students are eligible to play college sports. For information visit the website at https://web3.ncaa.org/ecwr3/ Please note that virtual credit recovery courses are not acceptable in fulfilling eligibility requirements. Potential athletes are highly cautioned against taking online courses. If you have questions, please contact the School Counseling Office.
Transcript Requests
● Transcripts and Other Records for Alumni
Former graduates may request a copy of their transcript by emailing the school Counseling Office and completing a transcript request form. There is also a set fee by the district for a complete copy of a permanent record. All seniors will receive an unofficial copy of their transcript during 1st-semester IGP meetings. All underclassmen will receive an unofficial transcript at the time of their IGP meeting. Current students are not charged for copies of transcripts
The College/Scholarship Application Process
To ensure that all counselor portions of applications are handled in a timely and efficient manner, students and parents should follow the outlined process. We will do our best to ensure that all transcript requests and counselor portions of applications are sent within 5-7 business days. However, all college and scholarship transcript requests must be submitted at least 2 weeks before the due date. Riverside High School does not send ACT/SAT scores with college applications. Students/parents are responsible for sending test scores to the appropriate college/university. Be sure to include the Riverside High School code 410951 when registering for the SAT and/or ACT to enable RHS to determine scholarship eligibility. Counselors will only send test scores with scholarship applications, military requests, and athletic requests unless special circumstances arise. Students must work directly with their school counselor. Parents may not initiate the processing of college or scholarship applications for students.
