II. COURSE OVERVIEW

The aim for Multi-Language Learners (MLs) at Paris Elementary is to attain proficiency across distinct dimensions of language acquisition, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The weekly tasks assigned to each group are contingent upon various factors, including their proficiency in their native language, prior proficiency in English, the requisite academic materials essential for success in the classroom environment, their specific curriculum placement, and their grade level.

The overarching objective is to systematically scaffold the entire learning process, thereby effecting a seamless transfer of responsibility to students, fostering the development of self-regulatory capacities, and cultivating independence in learning.  This will be done through the deliberate integration of pedagogical elements, including demonstrations, comprehensive explanations, and guided practice.  During the calendar year, the following things will be revisited as needed.

The instruction of language development will align with the five standards embedded in the content area material within our classroom, as per the guidelines outlined on the WIDA website.  They are as follows.

Standard 1 – Social and Instructional Language

English language learners communicate for social and instructional purposes within the school setting.

Standard 2 – Language of Language Arts

English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of language arts.

Standard 3 – Language of Mathematics

English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of mathematics.

Standard 4 – Language of Science

English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of science.

Standard 5 – Language of Social Studies

English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of social studies.

III. BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS

1. Listen to others

2. Take turns talking

3. Let everyone have a chance

V. COMMUNICATING WITH PARENTS

At the onset of the academic year, correspondence will be dispatched to parents, providing detailed information concerning the prior year's assessments, outlining the services that will be extended to their child, and specifying the accommodations designated for their Multi-Language Learner (ML) Throughout the academic term, periodic reminders regarding available computer programs and any pertinent information will be sent home.

All ML parents are welcome to use the information above to contact me. I am more than willing to arrange conferences, complete with interpreters, to address any concerns you may have.
