About Mrs. Rathburn

Hi, I'm  Mrs. Rathburn!

This school year is my first year at Carolina High, and my 29th year in education.  I started my career teaching mathematics at Berea High School where I taught every mathematics class from pre-algebra through AP Calculus. After teaching at Berea, I began working for the S.C. Coalition for Mathematics and Science at Clemson University where I worked with leaders across the state and country to identify best practices for helping students learn Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

I grew up near Cherrydale and graduated from Travelers Rest High School.  I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and a Master of Education degree in Learning Design and Technology, both from the University of South Carolina.  Go Gamecocks!

I believe that mathematics is best learned by doing mathematics.  Mathematically proficient students and adults are able to solve problems, explain their thinking, and connect mathematics to their daily lives. My goal is to design lessons that engage students in doing mathematics individually and in groups, provide opportunities for students to talk about mathematics, and help students develop personal responsibility while learning mathematics.

On a personal note, I have been married to my husband, Tom, since 2020. We do not have children, but have a very close multi-generational family.  Our family loves to get together for dinner, music, and fun!  I enjoy reading historical fiction and fantasy novels, taking cruise vacations, and listening to all kinds of music.
