Parents of students Speaking a Language other than English should complete a Home Language Survey at Registration.
Students are screened with the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) upon entering the United States. They may also be screened when coming from another state where the WIDA screener is not given. Each year students proficiency is assessed in late January. They must make a 4.4 in the areas of Listening. Reading, Speaking, and Writing before they can exit the ESOL Program. After exiting, students will be monitored for four years. WIDA is the Framework for English Language Learners.
Development Standards support academic language development and academic achievement for linguistically diverse
students through high quality standards, assessments, research, and professional development.
" WIDA's Can Do Philosophy" is based on the belief that all students bring to their learning
cultural and linguistic practices, skills, and ways of knowing from their homes and com-
munities. WIDA believes that an educators's role is to craft instruction that capitalizes on
and builds upon these assets.
