February Edition

Our cafeteria deserves five stars.

by Jayce G.

Ever since first grade, I've been bringing lunch from home. But in fifth grade, I finally got school lunch! You know, I should have gotten school lunch instead of bringing lunch that whole time.

The school lunch is so delicious! Every day there is something tasty on the menu. The food is definitely five stars. I like how they do specific lunches every day, like pizza and cheeseburgers on Friday. I also like that you can buy things on the side, like chips or ice cream.

Now I kind of like school lunch instead of bringing lunch to school every day.

School lunch is efficient too, because instead of having to remember to pack and bring lunch I just put money in my account and buy school lunch. It's easy.

The service is outstanding. It is quick and easy so you can sit down and eat faster. The lunch ladies ask you what your choice is, what you want on the side and what fruits or vegetables you would like. (The lunch ladies are very nice.) Then you get your milk and snacks (if wanted) and you sit down and eat!

That is why our cafeteria deserves five stars!

An Interview with Mrs. DeMeritt

by Alex A.

Mrs. DeMeritt is our science teacher at Oakview and comes up with fun science activities to do. She is also the host of garden workdays after school. I have been a part of garden workdays in the morning 2 or 3 times. I at home also do a lot of gardening with my dad, so I would say that gardening is a hobby of mine. I recently asked Mrs. DeMeritt some questions.

Q: How do you plan your lessons?

A: I look at science standards and pick a project that fits those standards then I look for a project online and bam I have a lesson.

Q: How do you create mazes?

A: I use little Legos and Brix tiles and randomly make patterns.

Q: Why did you choose this job?

A: I wanted to show kids science is awesome.

Q: Why did you get 3d printers?

A: I wanted to show 3d printing so kids might use it as a skill in careers.

We are so lucky to have Mrs. DeMeritt! She is an awesome teacher.

Check out the information down below about what we will be doing at the ball from Mrs. Patel. She is a part of PTA who plans parties for our school.

Questions for PTA

~How did PTA come up with the idea of a school dance.

The PTA wanted to have 2 events this year similar to the Father/ Daughter and Mother/Son dance but something would be for the entire school, so first we had the back to school glow bash, and this is the 2nd event - the Winter Masquerade Ball.

~Will there be other activities beside dancing?

Because each grade level only has an hour there isn’t a lot of time for more than just dancing, but of course more than a dance, it’s a time to have fun with your friends and family

~Will people have to pay to come in, or have a ticket?

You will need to purchase a ticket. Tickets go on sale January 21, and sales end January 31. Tickets are $6. Your ticket includes a decorate your own mask with a small decoration kit. Tickets and Mask will go home Tuesday February 4th.

Along with ticket orders You will also have the option to preorder a corsage or Boutonnières- these are usually worn for fancy dances, proms, weddings etc... - they will be $3 each and will be picked up at the dance

~Will food and drinks be provided?

Your ticket also has a voucher attached for a sweet treat and juice, to be redeemed at the dance. There will also be water bottles available. Again, it’s such a short amount of time per dance, there isn’t a lot of time for food and drinks.

~Will there be a DJ to play the music?

The Boosterthon DJ team will be there to help keep the Dance a lot of fun!

Some things to know :

It’s a Masquerade Ball, but not a costume party - which means you should dress up/fancy- think Cinderella’s Ball-

You can decorate your mask however you would like, as long as it does not cover the entire face. The masks are a nice thick cardboard paper and can be painted or colored, and of course you can glue on decorations. You could make it match your dress/ suit or you could make it something different. Add feathers and beads etc.

We will have some items to purchase at the event :

Ring pops

Candy necklaces

Fancy decorated masks

Hope I will see you there, and see you at the ball having a ball!

Mr. Oliveira

By: Owen L.

Mr.Oliveira is a new teacher here at Oakview, he loves to read and write. Mr .Oliveira likes watching sports especially soccer and hockey with a nice snack. He is a proud second grade teacher and ready to teach at Oakview Elementary.

Owen: Why did you become a teacher?

Mr. Oliveira: I started working with children at a young age as a camp counselor and eventually really started to enjoy it. Over time, it became what I'm most passionate about in life. Today, nothing makes me happier than teaching and watching the minds of students grow!

Owen: What are your strengths as a teacher?

Mr. Oliveira: I like to think I'm a pretty personable and relatable teacher. Being a younger teacher definitely helps with that! My students always know that they can talk to me about anything.

Owen: How do you interact with parents?

Mr. Oliveira: I enjoy interacting with parents and keeping them in the loop of what we do in the classroom. My weekly memo usually includes an update of what we've been working on, and I also like to send little notes home when a student has been doing a great job.

Owen: How do you use technology in the classroom?

Mr. Oliveira: Technology is obviously a huge part of education in today's classrooms, so that's definitely something that being young helps out with again. I like to use reading programs in class for the students to change up their reading medium. Our new Promethean Boards are pretty amazing too - they're capable of just about anything and I love being able to include it in almost every single lesson that I teach!

Make sure if you see him in the hallway, say hello and ask him about how he likes it here.
