STOP BULLYING

By: Chloe R.

Bullying is one of the top reasons why kids don’t want to come to school. There are many types of bullying but I'll only mention a few. The different types of bullying include but are not limited to cyber bullying, verbal bullying, and physical bullying. I would say that physical bullying is the worst. If you don’t know what physical bullying means I will tell you. Physical bullying is when someone is hurting someone else such as punching, hitting, and kicking. There are a lot more ways to hurt someone else but there are too many to list. Physical bullying is definitely really bad. Thankfully there is not that much physical bullying at schools, but you never know. I think that the second worst and the most popular type of bullying at schools is verbal bullying. If you don’t know what verbal bullying is I will explain. It is when somebody tells someone else something that will make their self confidence go down. So yes verbal bullying is also really bad. The last type of bullying is not the most common in elementary schools but it is pretty common in middle schools-it is cyber bullying. It is when you go on an app like Facebook,Instagram, and Twitter. You could post a video or a picture and someone will comment something mean or hurtful to you. So these are few types of bullying, not all but a few. Now let’s talk about the effects of bullying. For example let’s use my friend . I asked my friend some questions and she responded.

“In first grade I finally got another friend, who was in third grade. I was so excited that I sat with my new friend every day. I was very happy that I got a new friend. The year was coming to an end. I couldn't wait for summer vacation. But I didn't want to leave my friend behind. She told me,”don’t worry I will see you in two months” so I went home from the last day of school and waited to go back to school. Two months went by and it was time to go back to school, school started again I couldn't wait. I dashed to the car to get to school and off I went. I was ready to get on the bus to see two people that were sitting with my friend. I thought,”well two new friends to have.” so I went to the back of the bus. I was about to say hi when they stopped me and said,”who’s this idiot.” I was very ashamed. And was hoping my friend would stand up for me but instead she said,”an idiot who hung out with me last year.” I was very hurt. They bullied me for the rest of the year. I had become a very quiet, shy person. I would never raise my hand in class because I was afraid everyone would laugh if I got it wrong.”

So that is what happened to my friend. Don’t let this happen to your friend. Keep your school safe from bullies. Report to the library bully box if you see someone being bullied. Keep other kids safe. Stop bullying now!

The New Desks

By George K.

Oakview Elementary School got new desks that are shaped like fish. The desks are very expensive. Fourth and fifth grade got them first but the other grades will be getting them soon. We got the desks because the desks we had were old and run down.

The new desks are very clean and comfortable. They are nice and smooth and don’t have holes in them. The desks can be put together or not. We also got rectangular tables.

The new desks are better, they have a tote that can hold your materials. You can move the tote from desk to desk so you don’t have to move all of your materials.

Students like the new desks. My classmates like them because they are clean and they don’t look like our old desks.

The Barrier Island Trip

By: Nidhi Bathina

On November 18th to November 20th, two fifth grade classes went on a trip to Barrier Island. This island is located off the coast of Charleston, SC. The fifth graders participated in many fun and interesting activities.

On the first day, everybody arrived at Barrier Island. There, the person in charge of Barrier Islands told us why the island was named that way, and the animals who inhabit this place. Later, we went to the beach, there, we made sand castles and found some finger sponge. Then, in the afternoon, we went to the beach once more, yet this was different. Instead, we went to a deep muddy and swampy area where it stunk. Then after dinner, we went to our cabin and slept.

The next day, after breakfast we went to Susanna’s House to learn about reptiles. We learned about snakes as well. Did you know that a Copperhead snake is a pit viper, and like snakes, they are water moccasins? We also saw marine animals in their terrariums. We then went to the beach and learned about sea turtles and how the journey starts and ends.

On the last day, we went to the beach to search for sea animals to take pictures of. We took pictures of fish, jellyfish, and dolphins. Then after breakfast, we went to Susanna’s House to spend our last minutes here at Barrier Island. We went to the back yard of Susanna’s House to play for a bit before we had to leave. Then before the buses came, the chaperones took a picture of the fifth grade class of our trip at Barrier Island. We then boarded the bus and returned to Greenville.

The experience at Barrier Island was amazing. I recommend going, since it’s a great trip for any future fifth grader. It is a great way to see nature and science in real life instead of in the classroom.

School safety

By Kinsley C.

I think that school safety at Oakview Elementary is helpful because when someone gets hurt that the nurses really really help a lot . When you can’t walk they will put you in a wheelchair. It is so cool, but I think that when you get hurt it probably really hurts. I think that when I get hurt that it doesn’t help me to go to the nurse because it is so far down the hall way but I still think that when sometimes when I get really really hurt I would go down to the nurses office. Remember to be safe.

Recycling Time!

By: Allyson T.

Q: What do YOU do with the recycling?

A: Paper, plastic bottles and cardboard is recycled by a local company. Aluminum cans are put in the red cart out back and given to our local fire department. They get money for the cans and donate the proceeds to help those in need in our area. All other items are donated to local companies or sent to companies that recycle them for us.

Q: Do you recycle in the lab?

A: YES! I would never toss something that could be recycled or reused!

Q: Has America Recycles Week been good?

A: It's been amazing! We’ve collected over 750 pairs of shoes as of Thursday so we should hit 1,000 pairs tomorrow! Those in need in Africa will get some wonderful shoes to choose from thanks to everyone’s generosity.

Q: How many things did we recycle during America Recycles Week?

A: 1,000 pairs of shoes, several bags of cans and bottles, a box full of ink cartridges, several phones like iPhones and even flip phones, 10 pairs of eyeglasses, one tv, and many bags of markers and crayons!

Jingle Bell Toy Drop

By Avery Y.

During the jingle bell toy drop it is the most high-spirited time of the season because Christmas is around the corner. The jingle bell toy drop is where you give (new toys only) to Toys for Tots. Toys for Tots takes the toys and gives them to the parents who don't have enough money to afford gifts for their children. Student council and Oakview PTA controls this event. The jingle bell toy drop runs December 9 - 13. In conclusion the jingle bell toy drop is the best time to give to the ones who don't get.

Recycling

By Sean L.

Many of us are forgetting to recycle. Did you know that the seafood we eat has been swimming in plastic? Keep Oakview’s leaves green with these simple steps:

  • Reuse empty containers after washing them (we humans hate drinking soap)
  • Bring unused papers to school and recycle them
  • Never, ever leave trash to animals

So get out in that big world and keep it clean, keep it green!
