Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Nancy Washington, and I am currently serving as an Inclusion Resource Teacher at Beck International Academy. In this role, I will be co-teaching 6th-grade mathematics with Mrs. Gray and Mrs. Missouri-Franklin, as well as English Language Arts with Ms. Kopp and Miss Sutton.
Prior to joining Beck, while residing in South Carolina, I worked as a substitute teacher and later as a part-time resource room teacher at Hillcrest Middle School. Earlier in my career, before relocating to the South, I served as a Professor/Instructor of Behavioral Psychology at the Long Island Institute of Professional Studies, where I taught both graduate-level and in-service courses in online and on-campus formats. Courses I instructed included Behavior Modification, Criminal Psychology, Family Law, Establishing a Bully-Free Classroom, and Environmental Factors and Their Impact on Student Learning.
I have been working in the field of education for over 25 years and hold a Master’s Degree in Special Education/Reading, as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Nutritional Health Education. I also previously served as an inclusion teacher at Herricks Middle School on Long Island. While I value all of my professional experiences, my most meaningful role has been raising my three children.
On a personal note, my family and I relocated from Northport, New York, a small town on Long Island’s Gold Coast, to South Carolina in July 2013. Our decision to move was influenced in part by family members who had relocated to the South, as well as our desire to leave behind the long winters and heavy snowfall.
My husband, a physical education teacher and soccer coach at Riverside Middle School, and I are proud parents of three children. Our eldest, Andrew (26), is a Pharmacy Resident at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Our daughter Emily (22) recently graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in Psychology and is currently pursuing her doctoral studies in Behavioral Psychology at the University of South Carolina. Our youngest, Olivia (20), is a junior at the University of South Carolina, where she is majoring in Public Health and considering a future career in nursing.
As a family, the Washingtons are active and enjoy spending time together whenever possible. When we are not at school or work, we can often be found at the gym, running or walking on the Swamp Rabbit Trail, attending soccer games and other sporting events, exploring downtown Greenville, or spending time with friends and extended family. We also enjoy the company of our pets: Lucy (our orange cat), Louie (our tabby cat), Leo (our short-tailed black cat), and Lily, our sweet Holland Lop bunny.
My educational philosophy is grounded in the belief that all children can learn and that each child has unique strengths and gifts to contribute. As educators, it is our responsibility to identify, nurture, and help students develop their full potential.
I am deeply passionate about the work I do, and I am committed to supporting each student in becoming the best version of themselves academically, socially, and personally.
I am truly excited to be a part of the Beck Academy community and look forward to working in partnership with you to support your children’s growth and success.
