AP LIT & COMP
AP LITERATURE & COMPOSITION
SUMMER/WINTER BREAK ASSIGNMENT (Pre-Course Work)
Welcome to AP Literature! Below you will find your summer reading assignments. These assignments will be recorded as a first-quarter MAJOR and will not be exempted. Please email me with questions.
Read or listen to the book How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines, Revised Edition (2014)
*Do not read the “For Kids” version.
**Please don’t get stressed out when he references titles you have not read! That is normal and nothing to worry about. What you should pay attention to are the details ABOUT those books that he then discusses. For instance, he will discuss “Beloved” and then say something about how the work illustrates the theme of that chapter. Pay attention to the details.
***This book is the single most useful resource for this course and college. The benefits are many, so please do it. Each chapter is stand-alone, so you do not need to read it all at once for it to make sense.
Take notes summarizing each chapter of the book in your class notebook. Your notebook should have pockets and a page you can make into a table of contents. This will also be the notebook in which you will write your in-class essays. I prefer this notebook. You will be submitting your notes during the first week of class.
