Velita Jones was born in Greenville South Carolina September 25, 1967. She studied piano at the age of five under the tutelage of William Ezell and continued until graduation from Southside High in 1985. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education from South Carolina State University in 1989; a Master’s in Music from Converse College in 2001; a second Masters in Educational Leadership from Furman University in 2012 and an Educational Specialist Degree in Superintendency from Furman University in 2017. Velita started her career in teaching vocal music at Hughes Middle, Carolina High Academy, Greenbrier Elementary, Tanglewood Middle and Sue Cleveland Elementary. She is a Renewed National Board Certified Teacher (2014-2024). She has been honored as the 2011-2012 Teacher of the Year at Tanglewood Middle and the 2000-2001 Teacher of the Year at Greenbrier Elementary School. She is the mother of one son, Christopher B. Jones. Velita believes “Music is the Universal Language of the World”. Velita is currently a retired teacher working at Hollis Academy as the Title I Facilitator. She taught for 33 years in South Carolina. Her knowledge of children who have diverse backgrounds has allowed her to expand her musicianship, expertise and repertoire.
