Math has DEFINITELY changed over the past several years! There are math words we use today that parents or even grandparents may have never heard of or used before. Below are lists of words you can use when helping your student with math. Some might know the concept and not the word where others will have heard the word but forget what it means. These are great tools to help you child express their math thinking more clearly!

Addition and Subtraction

Addition words

Addend: a number being added to another number
Sum: the answer to an addition problem.
Addend+Addend=Sum

Subtraction words

Minuend: the initial number in a subtraction problem
Subtrahend: the number being subtracted
Difference: the answer to a subtraction problem
Minuend-Subtrahend=Difference

Place Value

Unit: a symbol or tool that represents 1
Rod: a symbol or tool that represents 10
Flat: a symbol or tool that represents 100
Place value: where a digit is within a number. For example, in the number 428, 8 is in the 1's place
Value: the value of a digit within a number. For example, in the number 428, 2 has a value of 20.
Expanded form: a number decomposed into its different values. For example, 400+20+8 is the expanded form of 428.
Standard form: a number written as we typically see it. For example 428 is the standard form of 400+20+8.

Geometry

-2D shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, trapezoid, rhombus, pentagon, hexagon, octagon,

-3D shapes: sphere, cone, cylinder, rectangular prism, triangular prism, pyramid

-Parallelogram: a shape that has 2 sets of parallel sides. An example is a rectangle or a square.

-Quadrilateral: any shape that has 4 sides.

-Net: a 3D shape that is unfolded.

Time and Money

-Hour hand

-Minute hand

-AM/PM

-Elapsed time: Time that has passed from one time to another.

Measurement

-Tools to measure: Ruler, tape measure, yard stick

-Standard units: inches, feet, yard, mile

-Metric units: millimeter, centimeter, meter, kilometer

-Conversions: 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard, 100 centimeters in a meter

Data

-Picture graph: a graph created using pictures to represent a value. For example, if I was graphing the amount of fruit in my refrigerator, I would draw 4 apples to represent the 4 apples I have.

-Bar graph: a graph created using data to form bars that represent a value. For example, if 3 students in a class brought a lunchbox to school, you would fill in 3 sections of the graph to create a bar blocks tall.
