Dear Fourth Grade Families,
In fourth grade, we use a simple system to communicate when an assignment has not been turned in. If an assignment is missing, you will temporarily see a 1 entered in the gradebook for that assignment.
The 1 is not a 1% or the student's actual grade. It is simply a placeholder that lets both you and your child know that the assignment has not yet been submitted and needs to be completed.
Because the placeholder is entered into the gradebook, you may occasionally notice your child's average in a subject drop significantly. Please don't panic! In most cases, this sudden change is simply the result of the temporary "1" for a missing assignment. Once the assignment is turned in and graded, the placeholder will be replaced with your child's actual score, and the average will adjust accordingly.
If your child is unsure which assignment is missing or thought they had turned it in, they should first check the no-name papers, look through their binder, ask a classmate, then ask me for assistance.
This system is designed to help students develop responsibility, organization, and ownership of their learning as they transition into the increased expectations of fourth grade.
