Dismissal Procedures

If there is a change in your child's transportation, you MUST send a note explaining the change. I cannot release him/her without this note.  If your child is a car rider and another family member or friend will be picking up your child, please send me a note as soon as possible letting me know that you give permission for your child to go home with this person.

Any changes in address or phone number should be sent to the teacher in writing as well.

Lunch 10:40-11:05

If you are sending money for lunch, please place the money in a Ziploc bag or envelope and place in the child's green homework folder.

Medication

Do not send medication to school with students. All medication must be brought in and picked up by an adult. Medication will be administered in the health room by the nurse.

Absences/Makeup Policy

Attendance is most important. Students should be in school every day and on time. State law requires children to be present 170 days of each 180-day school year. Students’ absences may cause the student to lose credit for the year. An unlawful or unexcused absence is any absence that is not verified by a statement within 2 days, therefore the students’ return to school does not meet the conditions for a lawful absence. Any absence after the tenth day must be excused by a statement from a doctor. A child may be retained if attendance laws are not followed. Student work cannot be prepared in advance for unexcused absences such as vacations.  Also, it is impossible for you to help your child make up all the work that he/she would be missing.  We do not give “busy work” in 1st grade and therefore most of the learning is teacher directed.

School-Wide Discipline Policy

Brook Glenn Elementary believes all students have the right to learn in a safe and orderly environment.  We believe all students can behave, and students are expected to follow classroom rules in order to allow for proper teaching and learning. Students are also expected to follow school rules during recess, in the cafeteria, in the hallways, during related arts, during assemblies, on field trips, and anytime the students are on campus or representing the school.

For more information, please refer to the student handbook.

Monthly Newsletter

A class newsletter is sent home monthly in Homework Folders, or parents may opt to receive an electronic copy via email.  It is very important that you read these.  The newsletter contains important information about curriculum, homework, projects, tests, school events, volunteering, and other important announcements.

Evaluation of Student Progress

The evaluation tools are selected on the basis of the appropriateness for the concept that is taught. Teacher observation, oral assessments, projects or reports, homework, journals, student portfolios, rubrics, anecdotal records, conferences with students, open-ended question responses, class participation, and performance are examples of evaluation tools that may be used. Students will be assessed in reading using the Fountas & Pinnell benchmarks.  Math assessments will be given after each unit. Re-teaching and re-testing strategies are used to remediate and strengthen weaknesses.
