About me:
Welcome! I'm Ms. Duncan, and I'm excited to be starting my second year teaching at Hillcrest.
I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and moved to Greenville nearly six years ago. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my husband, our dog, and whatever foster animals happen to be staying with us at the time!
Before becoming a teacher, I spent eight years working in healthcare. That experience gives me a unique perspective in the classroom and helps me show students how the science they learn connects to the real world. One of my favorite parts of teaching is watching students grow in confidence as they realize they're capable of understanding and applying challenging concepts.
My goal is to create a classroom where students feel supported, challenged, and comfortable asking questions. I hope to inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and an appreciation for how science helps us better understand the world around us.
I believe that strong communication between school and home is an important part of student success. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you ever have questions, concerns, or would simply like to check in on your student's progress. I look forward to working together to make this a successful and enjoyable school year!
Office Hours: Available before school Tuesdays and Thursdays or by appointment
Late Work and Make-Up Policies:
Late Work: If the student demonstrates active engagement, late assignments that are fully completed will be accepted with a deduction of 10 points per day for up to four school days. Work will be accepted up to five school days before the end of the quarter, with the highest possible score of a 60.
Missed Work/Make-up Policy: Students may make up missed work from any absence within 5 days of returning to school (or as outlined by district policy) with no penalty. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule and complete the work within that time. After 5 days, the assignment will be considered late. A zero may be temporarily recorded until the work is submitted and graded.
Major assessments retakes: Students are allotted one retake of a major assessment per unit if the following conditions exist:
No missing assignments (zeros) within that unit
Completion of teacher remediation practice (see teacher syllabus)
Retake assessments may differ from the original assessment.
Each retake must be completed before the end of the next unit. The highest grade of the two assessments will be recorded.
