Our main curriculum to help with self regulation and coping strategies. In our classroom, we use the Zones of Regulation to help students recognize, understand, and manage their emotions. The Zones give students a simple way to identify how they are feeling and choose strategies that help them be successful throughout the day.
How I might feel: Tired, sad, sick, bored, or low energy.
What might help:
Get a drink of water
Stretch or move
Take deep breaths
How I might feel: Calm, happy, focused, ready to learn, and in control.
This is the zone where students are often most ready to learn, solve problems, and work with others.
How I might feel: Frustrated, worried, excited, silly, nervous, or beginning to lose control.
What might help:
Take a movement break
Practice calming breaths
Use a fidget or calming tool
Ask for help
Take a break in our calming area
How I might feel: Angry, terrified, overwhelmed, out of control, or having a very big emotion.
When students are in the Red Zone, our priority is helping everyone stay safe while supporting the student in calming their body before returning to learning.
The goal is not for students to stay in the Green Zone all day. Every emotion is normal and important. Instead, we teach students to recognize how they're feeling, understand that emotions change, and use healthy strategies to regulate their bodies and emotions.
We celebrate growth, not perfection, and we remind students that all feelings are okay—it's how we respond to those feelings that matters
