Homework

It is my personal belief that homework is extra practice.  As a school, SCE does not assign much homework, and some teachers do not assign any homework at all. If any homework is assigned, it should not take longer than 1 hour at the intermediate level, per school board policy IHB.

I do NOT assign nightly homework. 

Reading:

One of the best things your student can do each day is read. 

Mathematics:

Do fluency practice.  Work with multiplication flashcards to improve multiplication fluency.  You can find flashcards at the dollar stores or make your own.  

Writing:

Encourage your student to tell you stories.  Have them elaborate and use details to help build more interesting stories.  For example, if you asked your student what did you do this weekend this is how they responded (see below), encourage more details and help with their creating and imaginative thinking.  This will help them process and think to add more details, adjectives, and interesting details into their stories when they are writing. 

First Story: I went to the park.  I played on the playground.  I had fun!   

New story:  My wonderful mom, annoying sister, and I (characters with details) went to the big, beautiful park (detailed setting) on Saturday morning (detailed setting).  I immediately ran to the swings, which is my favorite part of the park, and my sister went and sat at the boring picnic table talking on the phone with her friend.  As I was swinging really high, I noticed my sister yelling and running around the picnic table.  My mom calmly tried to tell her to stop running and I heard her say, "the bee isn't going to sting you."  My sister angrily grabbed the keys from the table, stomped away toward the car, and sat pouting in the car.  After I was done swinging, my mom and I walked around the trail before we headed back to the car.  I enjoyed the playground, even through my sister did not!  

Ask your student:

Who went to the park? (characters)

What was the park like? (setting)

What was your favorite part of the park? (details)

What else happened? (plot)

Tarea

Personalmente, considero que la tarea es una práctica adicional. Como escuela, SCE no asigna mucha tarea, y algunos maestros no asignan ninguna. Si se asigna tarea, esta no debe tomar más de una hora en el nivel intermedio, según la política IHB de la junta escolar.

Yo NO asigno tarea para todas las noches.

Lectura:

Una de las mejores cosas que su hijo puede hacer cada día es leer.

Matemáticas:

Practique la fluidez. Utilice tarjetas didácticas (*flashcards*) de multiplicación para mejorar la agilidad en el cálculo. Puede comprar estas tarjetas en tiendas de bajo costo o fabricar las suyas propias.

Escritura:

Anime a su hijo a contarle historias. Pídale que desarrolle sus relatos y utilice detalles para hacerlos más interesantes. Por ejemplo, si usted le pregunta qué hizo el fin de semana y responde de forma sencilla (vea el ejemplo a continuación), anímelo a añadir detalles y fomente su creatividad e imaginación. Esto le ayudará a procesar la información y a pensar en cómo incorporar más detalles, adjetivos y elementos interesantes al escribir sus historias.

Historia inicial: Fui al parque. Jugué en el área de juegos. ¡Me divertí!

Nueva historia: Mi maravillosa mamá, mi hermana fastidiosa y yo (personajes con detalles) fuimos al parque grande y hermoso (escenario detallado) el sábado por la mañana (escenario detallado). Inmediatamente corrí hacia los columpios, que son mi parte favorita del parque, mientras mi hermana se sentaba en la aburrida mesa de picnic a hablar por teléfono con su amiga. Mientras me columpiaba muy alto, vi a mi hermana gritando y corriendo alrededor de la mesa de picnic. Mi mamá intentaba decirle con calma que dejara de correr y la escuché decir: "La abeja no te va a picar". Mi hermana, enfadada, tomó las llaves de la mesa, se alejó pisando fuerte hacia el auto y se sentó allí haciendo un berrinche. Después de terminar de columpiarme, mi mamá y yo caminamos por el sendero antes de regresar al auto. ¡Disfruté del área de juegos, aunque mi hermana no!

Pregunte a su hijo:

¿Quién fue al parque? (personajes)

¿Cómo era el parque? (escenario)

¿Cuál fue tu parte favorita del parque? (detalles)

¿Qué más sucedió? (trama)
