My name is Emily Melson, and this is my second year at Hughes Academy. I graduated from the University of South Carolina with my degree in English in 2019 and have always dreamed of teaching one day. My sweet husband, Jimmy, who is also an educator, gave me the courage to pursue education when we got married in 2024, and this past year at Hughes was a dream come true. I love the kids, the content, and the joy of watching my students grow. I look forward to continuing in this career for the rest of my life!
Jimmy and I have two beautiful children who are entering kindergarten and first grade in Greenville County Schools this year. They are my whole heart, and I do my very best to show up for my students in the way I hope my children's teachers will show up for them. I am so honored to be entrusted with your child's heart and mind.
This year, we will explore a variety of texts, including Poe's short stories, Shakespeare's sonnets, and Lois Lowry's classic children's literature. More than exposure to great literary work, however, my goal is shape our seventh graders into strong critical thinkers who are capable of processing information and coming to their own informed conclusions.
To support this goal, I will be embracing a chromebook-free approach to writing this year (with the exception of typing final drafts, as needed). Studies have shown that students learn better with pen to paper, and I'm so excited to take a small step back from technology in order to achieve what I believe will be a huge leap in student development.Â
I love to chat, and I look forward to getting to know you! Please call or email me with any questions or concerns throughout the year. Communication is very important to me and I know our kids benefit from our conversations.
See you soon!!! It's going to be a wonderful year!
