My Philosophy of Discipline at School:
I wholeheartedly believe that skills such as respect, honesty, and courtesy are being taught in the home. However, students are tiny humans in need of guidance on how to appropriately express themselves in social settings. Even as adults, we do not always hit the target with this goal. Please rest assured that when your child visits with me we will discuss the event that took place, relearn the meaning of the skill that should be used in that situation, and your child will complete a thinking map of three better choices for the next time should a similar event occur. Finally, we will call you to share the concern, explain any consequences, and most importantly request for you to encourage your child in making better choices for the remainder of the day.
As we say at LFE: "Make it a Great Day or not, the Choice is Yours!"
A General Outline for Offenses:
First Minor Offense Form – Warning (Your child's teacher will contact you about the concern).
Second Minor Offense Form – Silent lunch, followed by a conference at the beginning
of recess (Private conversation with the teacher, student, and myself about the behavior and how
to change it). This will not take the entire recess period. (Your child's teacher will contact you about the concern).
Third Minor Offense Form – Restricted recess (student will stand, walk around, or sit in a restricted area
and will not be able to interact with other students, nor will they play with
recess equipment), at lunch they will complete the Getting to the Core organizer for making better choices, a conference will be had with the student and you will be contacted by administration.
After Three Minor Offense Forms – An Office Referral Form will be used in an escalated or severe event for documentation. A referral will be used as the next step in the event of repeated behavior concerns. At this time, I will begin partnering with the School Counselor, Classroom Teacher, and Parents about putting a plan in place to lessen the behavior and to continue to teach appropriate responses.
