Calculation of Grades: I will be sending home a copy of the skills report card each nine weeks. Grades will be calculated through teacher observation, anecdotal notes, writing samples, guided reading groups, checklists, unit math assessments, project-based learning, classroom performance and participation.

Report Card Skill Key: Kindergarten students will only receive a letter grade -

M=The student consistently meets or exceeds end-of-year expectations for this standard.

P=The student shows expected growth/progress in meeting end-of-year standard.

B=The student is beginning to progress toward end-of-year standard.

N-The student needs intensive support at school and home to develop this end-of-year standard.

*If left blank, this standard was not addressed or assessed during this reporting period.

Math Assessment (Fall & Spring)

FastBridge (Fall, Winter, & Spring)- This assessment tests for fluency. At the end of the school year, students should be reading a minimum of 60 words per minute.

Kindergarten Readiness Assessment - KRA2 (Fall & Spring)- At the end of the school year, students should be reading level D or higher.

Homework Policy: Homework will be sent home on Monday, and it will be due back the following Friday. Homework should be completed by the student with help from the parent. Homework is reviewed for understanding and checked for completion.

Attendance and Tardy Policy: The state of South Carolina says that a child can have no more than 10 absences in a school year. All absences and tardies must be recorded. A written excuse is required for each absence.

Classroom Management: My class operates according to one rule: “Make good choices!” We will talk extensively at the beginning of the year about the importance of making good choices.

To help keep track of our behavior throughout the day, I use the color system. There are six colors—blue, purple, green, yellow, orange, and red. Each child has a clothespin with his/her name on it that will be on green at the beginning of each day. A child who isn’t making good choices will have to move his/her clothespin to the yellow square, and for more serious or repeat offenses, to the orange or red square. Children who make exceptionally good choices will have the opportunity to move to the purple and blue square, indicating that they are setting a positive example for others to follow. A child who has moved a clip to the yellow, orange, or red square will have the opportunity to move it up again, if their behavior improves as the day goes on.

At the end of the day, students who are on blue will get 2 stamps and those on purple will get 1 stamp. When a child reaches 10 stamps, he/she will be able to go to our treasure chest. I will indicate the color your child is on for the day on the behavior chart and an explanation of why.

Communication: Communication between parents and teachers is essential and can happen in a variety of ways. A folder will be sent home daily that will contain a behavior chart, weekly newsletter, homework, and other important papers. I will check this folder each morning. If you have any questions or concerns, you can send a note in your child’s folder, email me, message me through Remind, or call me at 864-355-8320. My email address is mcwatson@greenville.k12.sc.us. I will respond to you as quickly as possible.

Non-Instructional Routines:

Change in Address, Phone Numbers, and Dismissal Procedures: All changes should be sent to the teacher in writing as soon as possible. Children will be sent home according to their usual dismissal procedure unless we have written notification from the child’s parent.

Lost and Found: A school lost and found is maintained. Please let me know if your child has lost something, so we can check the lost and found daily.

Sending Lunch Money and Other Fees to School: Please send all money in an envelope or Ziploc bag clearly marked with your child’s name, the teacher’s name, and the purpose for the money. Lunch money should also be labeled with the student’s lunch number.

Bringing Toys to School: We discourage bringing toys to school unless they are requested by the teacher.

Children’s Use of the Bathroom: There is a bathroom in each classroom. Children go to the bathroom at specific times and on an as needed basis.

Snack: Each child will bring snack approximately one time a month for the entire class (24 students). A snack calendar will be sent home at the beginning of the month, and we will remind you of your date in our weekly newsletter. Some healthy snack suggestions are: applesauce, dried fruit (raisins, cranberries, banana chips, etc.), string cheese, trail mix, popcorn, yogurt, granola bars, pretzels, goldfish, graham crackers, cheese crackers, animal crackers, chips, fruit juice. Individually wrapped snacks work best.

Birthdays: You will be assigned snack on your child’s birthday, so that you may send a birthday treat for snack that day. Some good suggestions for birthday snacks are: mini cupcakes, smaller cookies, or small sized brownies. We do not have a birthday party at school for your child; this is just a day to have a special snack. Your child will be able to distribute birthday party invitations at school, provided that each child in the class is invited, per school policy.

Field Trips: For all field trips off school grounds, we must receive a signed permission form from each student.

Arrival: School starts at 7:45 AM. Students should not arrive before 7:15, as there is no one available to supervise them. Students that arrive between 7:15-7:45 will sit in the hallway until the bell rings, and at that time, they will be dismissed to their class.

Dismissal: Dismissal time is 2:30 p.m. There are no early dismissals allowed after 2:00 p.m.
