My name is Julie Summey. I graduated from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC with my Bachelors of Music Education in 1990 and my Masters of Music Education in 1991. This is my 1st year at Greenbrier Elementary and I am so excited to be here! Before joining the wonderful Greenbrier family I taught band at Bryson Middle School for 21 years. I started my teaching career in Bishopville, SC where I taught middle and high school band for three years.
I have two wonderful children. My oldest is an App State graduate with a music degree and now works for TD Bank. My youngest is a also an App State graduate and is graduate school at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts for film scoring (writing music for movies). I guess you could say music and App State definitely runs in the family. (My late husband was an App State alum as well.) In fact, we were the 2017 Appalachian State University Family of the Year. Rounding out our family is our 13 year old labradoodle named Luci.
When I get free time, I love to read, listen to music, and watch TV. My music choices are varied. I like just about all styles. Some more than others, but I appreciate good music of any kind. I absolutely love Broadway musicals and can be found at the Peace Center regularly. Motown and '80's music are my two main go to styles in the popular music genre. The love of music is something I hope to instill in my students. When it comes to books and movies, I am very much a nerd. I love science fiction and fantasy. I am a HUGE fan of Harry Potter (I am a Hufflepuff), Doctor Who (9 and 10 are my favorites), DISNEY, Marvel, and Star Wars. :)
