Math and reading intervention can look different for many people and schools. At Sterling, math and reading intervention are considered a Tier 2 push-in/pull out service. In the area of math interventionist try to push into the homeroom classroom to help limit disruption. For reading instruction, students are pulled out of the classroom to work on individual needs and skills. During a twenty to thirty minute session, students are working in a small group with the teacher on foundational math/reading skills to help build up to grade level standards. This instruction is used to help build confidence, look at different strategies for a variety of concepts, and help develop missing foundational skills in order to guide the student in performing more on grade level. In the primary classrooms the Bridges Intervention Curriculum along with grade level curriculum units are used to help prepare our students in their daily math instruction. Reading Horizons instruction is used to help build students reading skills. Our groups meet five times a week within a twenty or thirty minute time block. Within each small group, students have a warm up activity, daily lesson, and an independent practice time. Throughout the lesson students are able to talk, use hands on manipulatives, and a variety of strategies to help them become successful in their daily work.
