Narrative Writing/Lord of the Flies

We start the school year off in our survival unit. In this unit, the students read Lord of the Flies and create their own survival narrative story. Before reading the book, we teach students symbolism, character analyzation, flashback, and foreshadowing. We take these skills that we learn and analyze the book to find a deeper meaning. When the class has finished the text, we do a project based on the book and the different elements we discussed during reading.

Once we finish the text, we then move to narrative writing. We go over how to create dialogue and how to create a story. The students are then told to create their own survival narrative, similar to the one we just read. During the writing process, we do writer workshops and peer editing.
