Special Services - Mrs. Smith

I have been teaching at AJ Whittenberg for 11 years in Special Ed. I have taught for 30 years, in 3rd grade, 4th grade, preschool, and in special ed in elementary school and high school. I have a Bachelors of Arts in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education from Clemson University. I also have a Masters in Special Education in Multi-disabilities, and I'm also certified in Learning Disabilities.

When I am not teaching, I love spending time with my family, especially my sweet grandsons and adorable grandaughter! We love going to the beach, Clemson and Middle Tennessee State football games, and my husband's football games in Barnwell! I also love reading, doing yoga, and exercising.

A learning style is the strategy each student uses to retain information more efficiently while studying. Learning styles can be traced back to 334 BC, when Aristotle declared that “every child possessed specific” talents and skills.

Teachers incorporate different teaching methods in a classroom to accommodate other students' learning styles. This ensures all students have an equal opportunity to learn and succeed academically.

In recent decades, learning styles have continued to gain popularity among educators. The following factors have contributed to this:

The rise of individualized learning is where educators tailor instruction to meet the individual learning needs of every student.
The availability of technology, such as videos and other online resources, has made it easier to incorporate different learning styles in the classroom.
Increased awareness is enabling teachers to acknowledge the differences among their students.
Acceptance of culturally responsive learning that allows inclusivity and diversity in the curriculum.

We teach a comprehensive foundational literacy skills solution that develops essential decoding skills in the English language. This program helps students build critical literacy skills, close learning gaps, and gain the confidence needed to become fluent, independent readers. It includes three key components designed to advance reading proficiency.
