I. Course Description
A large variety of supplemental reading and listening materials are used throughout the course. Vocabulary, texts, and activities are presented according to themes, such as school life, leisure, social issues, media, environment, and world challenges. Grammar is reviewed within the context of these themes. Academic and behavioral expectations are high. The course curriculum conforms to the SC State Standards for Modern Language learning:
II. Instructional Philosophy
The course is taught primarily in the target language. Students are encouraged to participate fully and communicate as much as possible in the native language. Advanced reading materials and writing forms are introduced; speaking fluency and listening skills continue to be developed. Students are exposed to cultural and literary life in the target country. Authentic texts and auditory materials will be a springboard for speaking and writing activities used for Integrated Performance Assessments (IPAs) designed for each unit. Other materials will be integrated where desirable.

V. CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM
In accordance with Greenville County School District policy, all cheating and plagiarism will result in a grade of “0” for the assignment. This includes electronic plagiarism such as AI via computer or Internet translators. Parents will be contacted in the event of cheating or plagiarism. Cellphones are to be kept in pencil boxes on the desks on ‘silent’ during lessons. Students will put cellphones in their backpacks at the front of the room for testing.
This year, students will use MagicSchool AI, a generative AI platform designed specifically for education. As tools like ChatGPT and Gemini become standard in the professional world, utilizing MagicSchool prepares students for the future workforce by teaching safe and responsible technology use.
Students will use these tools for real-time feedback and dynamic problem-solving. To ensure appropriate use, teachers retain access to all student chats. MagicSchool strictly protects privacy and does not collect or utilize student data. All AI software, including MagicSchool, complies with GCS Board Policy and Administrative Rule IA.
This course may utilize generative AI tools, such as MagicSchool and Google Gemini, to supplement traditional instruction. Greenville County Schools prioritizes the ethical use of these technologies for brainstorming and self-guided learning.
Critical Thinking First: AI must not replace original thought or coursework.
Academic Integrity: Using AI to complete and submit assignments as original work constitutes plagiarism.
Required Citation: If teacher-approved, all AI use must be properly cited.
Content Awareness: Students must remain vigilant regarding potential biases and inaccuracies in AI-generated content.
Policy Compliance: All AI programs align with GCS Board Policy and Administrative Rule IA.
VI. ATTENDANCE, E-LEARNING & ABSENCES
If a student is absent on the day of a test or quiz, but was present the day it was assigned, he/she must be prepared to take it the day of his/her return to school. Any papers due during the absence must be turned in the day the student returns to school. Arrangements for work to be made up must be on an individual basis and makeup work may depend on the kind of assignment. Makeup sessions are to be scheduled with me as quizzes and tests frequently have listening components. Please provide a parent note or email to make up assignments, quizzes or tests. ATTENTION GUARDIANS: If your student has to be absent on the day of a quiz or test due to family travel or a medical appointment, please send me an email at mwall@greenville.k12.sc.us to verify the absence. If I receive no verification from the parent or guardian, I will have to assume that the student has cut class to avoid taking the quiz or test, and pursue disciplinary action.
VII. MATERIALS
All students must have the following materials:
1) Chromebooks charged and ready.
Texts will be available for use.
2) A separate 3-ring binder just for French class. This must be large enough to hold class notes, handouts, and graded assignments that are on paper. Students will maintain and turn in a digital notebook and it will be graded at least once each quarter. Students must create their ‘French folder’. They must upload the syllabus at the front (25%). They must have a Google doc labeled ‘Daily Learning Targets Quarter 1’, and write the dated Learning Target for the day (25%). When in face-to-face instruction, the LT will be on the whiteboard. When in a digital classroom, it will be on the class slide for the week. There will be digital assignments, grammar tutors /notes, vocabulary, classwork (25%), and returned graded work that go in individual folders per class in the file cabinet.
2) Notebook paper
3) Target language dictionary (ex. Larousse English to French)
4) Black ink pens, highlighter, colored pens or pencils

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
START AND STOP F2F
When the bell rings to begin class, students should have already sanitized their desks and be quietly getting out their Chromebooks, any homework, and their notebooks. Cellphones are to be put on silent in the pencil boxes unless otherwise directed. Students should copy and date the French 3 Honors daily focus question in their notebooks. Students do not pack up materials before class is over and are not dismissed until I say “Au revoir!” Students remain seated until dismissed by the teacher. Everyone is requested to clean their desk upon entering the classroom.

Muting: All microphones should be muted. Please mute yourself if you are not already muted.
Cameras: You MUST be on camera to receive credit.
Questions or Contributions: When you have a question, type in the chat and wait for your teacher to call on you. If you would like to contribute but it is not your turn to talk, use the chat feature in the right hand corner.
Your Turn: Wait for the teacher to call on you to unmute yourself. Only one student should contribute/talk at à time.
Stay Attentive: Pay attention to your teacher or other students who are speaking.
Other Tips:
Do: Don’t:
Wear appropriate clothing. Share your screen unless told to by your teacher.
Keep your video on. Talk when someone is talking.
Pay attention. Chat in the background during the lesson.
Sit with your Chromebook on à Mute or delete others from the room.
Stable surface. Use emojis unless asked to by your teacher.
Look in the camera when talking. Use your cell phone unless directed to do so.
TEXTBOOKS AND EQUIPMENT
Digital textbooks are in your student backpack. Look for the EMC Passport icon to access T’es branché. Many of our class resources will be available either through your digital textbook or uploaded to your Google Classroom. The Promethean board, projector, and computer are for instructional use and should only be used with permission and as instructed. We will have to sanitize anything that you may use before leaving the classroom..
EXTRA HELP
Extra help is available in room 223 for French most mornings from 8:00-8:30 am. Please feel free to ask me about getting help if you need extra practice or explanation. Do not wait until you get behind.
MAKEUP WORK
Make-up work is defined as work not completed or turned in due to a student’s absence.
This policy is set by the district.
Students may be allowed to make up work due to absences that are excused, unexcused or related to discipline with no penalty within 5 days or a reasonable time according to GCSD board policy.
If a student misses work due to an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to coordinate time with the teacher within 5 days of return to make up the work. Any work not submitted within the 5 day makeup period will turn into “late work.”
Alternative assignments may be given for performance-based tasks that cannot be recreated in a make-up format.
If a student is present on the day a test, quiz or project due date is announced and then absent on the day of the test, quiz or project deadline, he/she must be prepared to take the test, quiz or turn in the project on the day he/she returns to school.
Field trips and participation in other extracurricular events (such as athletics) are considered attendance days. Work missed due to such events can be submitted electronically by midnight on the day that it is due. Items that cannot be submitted electronically should be submitted the following attendance day.
Students are encouraged to see Ms. Wall to make up for late work in a proactive manner. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher and make arrangements.
Students absent on the day of an oral presentation or interview must present their work the next class day. Students should check their Google classroom if it is a recorded presentation using media such as Vocaroo.
Late Work Policy
Late work is defined as work not completed/turned in on time even though the student attended the class.
Any assignment which is not turned in on time will be deducted 10 points off of the original grade earned for each school day the assignment is late up to five days.
After five days, the student will be assigned a 0 for the assignment.
Late work will not be accepted after the end of a grading period.
Students who have 504/IEP/ESOL accommodations specifically allowing for extra time may exceed the 5 day window to maintain compliance with their respective educational plan.
Students are encouraged to utilize the before and after school tutoring programs to complete make-up and late work in a proactive manner.
Exception: a family emergency may require the work to be turned in the next day, but this requires a parent note/email to Ms. Wall. No credit will be received if the student has used an Internet translator to complete work, particularly on projects!
IDENTIFYING WORK F2F
Assignments must be fully identified in the top right hand corner as follows: First name and last name, date, class, and assignment.
COLLECTING WORK
It will be handled in one of 4 ways.
1) The student holds the paper until it is called for. Papers are then passed to the front of the row where they are collected, stapled, and put in the large tray.
2) The student puts the work in a large tray on my desk and begins the next assignment.
3) The teacher will walk around the class to check assignments.
4) The teacher collects the work from students as they leave.
CLASS PARTICIPATION
All students must participate in all activities, both individual and group activities. “Ticket-out-the door” or “Summary” questions at the end of the period count as participation and an informal or formal class assessment. Students requesting anything need to attempt to ask in French. Every student will receive a guide on how to ask for things or permission in French. If the student has trouble pronouncing something, he or she is allowed to ask a classmate how to do so as long as he’s/she’s not disruptive.
KLEENEX AND PENCIL SHARPENING
When a student needs to use Kleenex or to sharpen his/her pencil, the student is to raise his hand and ask permission in French. Students may use the classroom expression guide on the wall, or ask a classmate for help.
SEATING
Students will remain in their assigned seats unless instructed or given permission to move. Desks are not to be moved except for group work and are not to be moved next to the classroom equipment, or the door. Space must be left to walk between and around groups.
COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS
Parents can access grades from the on-line program Power Teach. I am available to discuss grades or other concerns with students or parents upon appointment. Grades will not be discussed with students during class. The best time for parents to call (355-2512) is after 12:00 p.m., or email mwall@greenville.k12.sc.us.
WORK AREAS F2F
Each student is responsible for the upkeep of his/her work area during and at the end of class. Materials (including closed backpacks) should not be in the aisles during class, and at the end of class all trash in or around the desk goes in the trashcan. All classroom materials borrowed must be returned and sanitized. During testing time, students will be asked to put cell phones on my desk and book bags at the front of the class. During class time, no cell phones are to be used and are to be kept in the pencil boxes assigned to each desk.
GUM, FOOD, DRINKS
No chewing gum is allowed during speaking interviews. No food or sodas are to be brought into the classroom as accidents happen, and they attract bugs and rodents. Water bottles are allowed.
MASKS
If you are sick, stay home. I encourage you to wear masks to protect yourself and others.
PASSES
Medical passes from the nurse may be necessary if a student’s medication or medical condition causes him/her to go to the restroom more frequently. Students with medical problems who need to see the nurse at certain times must have a medical pass from the nurse. If a student has a medical ‘fast pass’, he/she needs to make sure not to lose the fast pass. No student will be allowed to leave the class without his/her Smart Pass and the yellow hall pass.
EXTRA CREDIT IS NOT AN OPTION
The best way to be successful is to study 30-45 minutes a day, complete assignments, and not be absent. Students who share quiz questions, copy another student’s correct answer, or take pictures of questions in any way will face disciplinary action.
TARDIES
Students are to arrive on time. Consequences of being tardy follow the student handbook. Students who are late to 1st period class should report to the Attendance Office to obtain a tardy pass. Students are given five minutes to transition between each class and should be prompt in reporting to class. Students are expected to physically be in the room when the bell rings.
