Initial Placement

W-APT - When a student enters the United States for the first time and is attending a Greenville County they are administered the W-APT to assess their English proficiency. This assessment is used for initial screening of the English language, identification of the student’s level of English language proficiency, and placement for services within the ESOL Program.

WIDA-ACCESS Placement Test information

ANNual state wide english proficiency testing

ACCESS - All students identified as English Language Learners (ELL) in grades K-12 who attend Greenville County Schools grades K-12 are given the ACCESS 2.0. This English-language proficiency assessment is administered during the months of February and March. The ACCESS assessment is a standardized English language proficiency test that is used to determine English proficiency in listening, reading, writing, and speaking in compliance with requirements.


Exiting ESOL

In order to exit the ESOL program, students must score a 4.0 or higher in all domains (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) of the ACCESS test as well as have a composite score of at least 4.8. Beginning in 2017-18 school year, students will be monitored for four years after exiting the program to ensure they are successful in their classes with no need for language assistance.

Exemptions from State Testing

ELL students participate in all district and state-wide testing with one exception--EL students entering United States schools for the first time after July 1 of the academic year of testing are exempted from the English Language Arts (ELA) portion of standardized tests.

All ELL students are eligible for accommodations on testing based on their individual needs. Accommodations are based on the recommendations of the classroom and ESOL teachers and are used regularly throughout the year.
