Being safe means keeping ourselves and others out of danger.
Being kind means we treat others how we want to be treated.
Being respectful means we show people we care about their thoughts and feelings.
Being responsible means making good choices.
In our class we focus on positive reinforcement routines to encourage all students to strive to do their best and reduce misbehaviors. However, if there are misbehaviors in class, I have a 5 step behavior management plan to address the undesired behaviors. Consequences that fit the misbehavior are included to teach students that there are consequences to their actions
Warning - The student will be warned of there undesired behavior and redirected towards a more appropriate behavior.
Level 1: Removal of Distraction - The distraction that is causing misbehavior will be removed. Example: Moving a student's seat so they are no longer by friends they are tempted to talk to or taking away a toy/material that is a distraction
Level 2: Loss of Privilege - Students will lose a privilege for that day that fits their misbehavior. Example: If a student continues to talk while they are supposed to be listening/working, they will have a silent lunch.
Level 3: Loss of Recess Time and Discussion with Student - The student will use some recess time to have a discussion with Miss Young about their behavior and have a reflective conversation about what they can do to correct their behavior and have a more productive day. Student will fill out a behavior reflection sheet. The student will also be reminded that this is the 3rd warning and the next step is a call/letter home.
Level 4: Letter Home - The student will spend some of recess time writing a letter home explaining which of our 4 class rules they broke, how they broke it, explaining the situation, and what they will do next time to fix their behavior. Miss Young will follow up with the parent with a message or phone call to discuss the issue.
Level 5: Behavior Referral to Assistant Principle - After the first 4 levels have been gone through with no success, Miss Young will refer the student to the AP to address the misbehavior.
Chromebooks are a learning tool, not a toy or gaming device
We will only be using Chromebooks for academic purposes. If they are sent home for e-learning days or any other reasons, they should only be used for school purposes.
Take great care of your Chromebook.
It is the student's responsibility to take care of your Chromebook. Treat it carefully, carry it with two hands, and don't bring food or water near it.
If the case breaks, tell Miss Young so we can get you a new one.
Students are expected to be present at all e-learning class meetings and complete all school work as if they were in the school building that day.
All class work will be posted in Google Classroom in the case of e-learning.
Talking Points: I will do the majority of my class-wide communication through the app Talking Points. I highly recommend downloading the Parent version of the app.
Monthly Newsletters: I will post weekly news letters on class website.
Tuesday Folders: I will send home the red communication folders home every Tuesday. In them will be some of students' grades from that week for you to review.
Phone and email: I can be reached through my school email: dmyoung@greenville.k12.sc.us and my class phone number: (864) 355-0344. Please note that the phone will go straight to voicemail during school hours but if you leave a message, I will return it after school. I will respond to emails within 24 hours Monday-Friday.
We would love to celebrate our students' birthdays in class this year! If you choose to send birthday treats to school with your student, they must be commercially prepared and packaged, (no home-made treats).
