Dear Parents,

I would like to welcome you to first grade. I am looking forward to a wonderful year. I would like to take this opportunity to let you know a few things about me. I grew up in a small farm community in Emmetsburg, Iowa. I went to college at Minnesota State University in Mankato, MN and graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education and Early Childhood in 1988. I have 27 years teaching experience, 10 years in kindergarten, 2 years in first grade, and 15 years in second grade. I have been a Gordon Gator since the school first opened.

In March 2009, I graduated from Walden University with a Masters Degree in Reading and Literacy. I implement many different strategies in both reading and math to try to help each student to grow and succeed. I am a hands-on learner and teacher. I incorporate many hands-on learning opportunities for students through collaborating, partner and small group games, and using manipulatives.

I moved to Simpsonville from Orlando, FL 19 years ago. I have three beautiful daughters, adopted from China.  Fall is my favorite season, mostly because of the changing leaves, cooler weather, and football. I enjoy hiking, cooking, going to plays, watching football (Go Hawkeyes!!), movies, trying new restaurants, the beach, and playing cards and Mahjong. The past couple of years have brought a few big changes to our family. I lost my dad to Covid in January 2022, so my mom and I build a house together and she moved in with me two years ago. I am so grateful for the time I get to spend with her.

I look forward to getting to know your child and having a great year! I will do my best to help your child to learn as much as possible this year and have a positive school experience.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, you may reach me at school or by email at mihawkin@greenville.k12.sc.us

Sincerely,

Michelle Hawkins
