Course Description: Ceramics, at its core, is the reforming of the earth into functional & aesthetic pieces that serve a specific purpose. This class is an introduction to ceramics that will cover a variety of clay forms, techniques, and historical perspectives.
Course Goals: By the end of the course, you will have gained an understanding and awareness for art as well as increased your art making skills.

Ceramics III
Course Description: Ceramics, at its core, is the reforming of the earth into functional & aesthetic pieces that serve a specific purpose. This class is advanced level ceramics instruction that will cover a variety of clay forms, techniques, and historical perspectives.
Course Goals: By the end of the course, you will have developed a series of sculptural artworks in which your artistic voice is refined as well as your craftsmanship.
PREREQUISITE: Ceramics I and Instructor approval
Required Supplies:
Students will have designated cubbies or shelves for their supplies.
Sketchbook (100 pages, 9 X 12, SPIRAL BOUND). NOT Glue bound pads or perforated pages, these come apart within a week or two and the pages fall out. The sketchbooks are used on a daily basis so they need to be sturdy to last the year.
** If you have a situation that prevents you from getting these materials, please talk to me in private and we will take care of it. **
Google Classroom:
Google classroom will be used to turn many assignments in. At the end of each unit the students will be responsible to document (photograph) their final resolution and create an online portfolio. This portfolio will be used at the end of the year as part of their final assessment.
Grading Procedures and Assessments
Minor Assessments 40%, Major Assessments 60%
Extra Credit: Bring in supplies as listed above. Each is worth 5 points that will be added to a minor grade. (Capped at 20 pts. per marking period).
Attend an art event and write a one page reflection paper, bring in documented material, create a power point, give a class demonstration. This is worth 10 points to a major grade. (Capped at 20 pts per marking period)
Homework Procedures: No HW in Art. All art can be completed in the studio.
Students will complete missing work or if they fall behind on the daily schedule set for the unit, will catch up on their own time.

Sketchbook Grade:
Minor assessments include studies, exercises, preliminary activities, writing critiques, reflective writing. (Maximum of 12)
Major assessments include Final Art works and are accompanied by Artist Statement and Rubric. (Maximum of 3)
For the final grade, each quarter is worth 40% and the final exam (cumulative for the semester) is worth 20%. A student must make a final grade of 77 or higher in order to take advanced level art courses.
The following district-wide grading scale will be used for this class:
90-100 A 80-89 B 70-79 C 60-69 D Below 60 is an F
Work that is late will be penalized by the following schedule:
Missing or late work for majors and minors will be accepted up to 3 class periods after the assigned due date. There will be a 20-point deduction for each class period the work as late. Late work will not be accepted if it is more than 3 class periods late.

§ Cell phones policy is according to the student handbook. I will call home & write referrals for anything that impedes your success. Your educational momentum is urgently important.
Consequences
Violations of any of the above expectations will result in negative consequences such as parent contact and disciplinary referrals.
The student will be warned.
The student will be spoken to one on one.
The student’s seating will be adjusted accordingly.
The parents/guardians will be contacted.
The student will be required to attend teacher detention.
The student will get a referral for the offense.
Daily Procedures:
The students will read the Promethean Board upon arrival and follow the posted instructions for the day. They will do daily assignments in their sketchbooks/binders that will be a minor grade at the end of the allotted time or continue along on the major project. The students will clean up no earlier than 5 minutes left to class.
Bottled water is allowed in the art classroom. Other food and liquids are prohibited.
Earbuds use will be not permitted in class.
Make-up Work
Students who miss class will be given one week to make up work. It is the student’s responsibility to make up the work they have missed. The work in this class is heavily project-based and often can only be completed in the classroom. I am available before and after school by appointment and during my planning if a student needs extra time to complete missed work.

Course Outline
The Ceramics I & III curriculum is based on SC Visual Arts Standards and focuses on the following areas of study: Clay techniques, Design, Aesthetics, and Art History.
