Helping at Home &

 E-Learning

Dear Parent/Guardian,

In reading intervention lessons there are four things that I teach and students practice. I have listed these items below and a brief description of what students can do to continue to practice these four things at home.  Students can practice these skills with the books in their RTI bags or library books.

1) Reading Fluency - Students read out loud (and silently) with accuracy

(correctly), expression (sound like the characters), smoothly (pay attention

to punctuation marks) and naturally (not too fast or slow...just right

reading).  The more students read, the more fluent they will become!

2) Reading Comprehension – Students understand what they read and

are able to talk about what they read and answer questions. Meaning is the

most important aspect of reading. Looking at pictures is very helpful, but make sure they look at the word first!

3) Writing – Students write about what they read to make reading/writing

connections. Writing also includes letter formation and word work.

4) Word Work – Students practice sight words (words we see frequently when

we read or write) and look for word features (certain letters like vowels,

certain patterns like –igh, certain endings like –s, -ed, -ing, or certain word

parts like digraphs (ch, sh, th, wh) and blends (bl, br, cl, str...).
