Title I is the largest Federal aid program for schools in the United States. ESSA, Every Student Succeeds Act, was established in December 2015. ESSA includes provisions that will help to ensure success for students and schools. Below are just a few. The law:
Advances equity by upholding critical protections for America’s disadvantaged and high-need students.
Requires - for the first time - that all students in America be taught to high academic standards that will prepare them to succeed in college and careers.
Ensures that vital information is provided to educators, families, students, and communities through annual statewide assessments that measure students' progress toward those high standards.
Helps to support and grow local innovations—including evidence-based and place-based interventions developed by local leaders and educators—consistent with our Investing in Innovation and Promise Neighborhoods.
Maintains an expectation that there will be accountability and action to effect positive change in our lowest-performing schools, where groups of students are not making progress, and where graduation rates are low over extended periods of time.
The purpose of Title I, Part A of Public Law 107-110 is to enable schools to provide opportunities for children to acquire the knowledge and skills contained in the challenging state content standards and to meet the challenging state performance standards developed for all children. This purpose is accomplished by such efforts as:
providing an enriched and accelerated educational program
promoting school reform through schoolwide programs or through additional services that increase the amount and quality of instructional time.
significantly upgrading the quality of instruction by providing staff with substantial opportunities for professional development as well as affording parents meaningful opportunities to participate in the education of their children at home and at school.
The Districtwide Title I Plan offers supplementary staff and programs to support existing district efforts to help children and families succeed.
