Class Overviews
English 1 Honors: Our first unit focuses on the Reading Literature standards through the study of prose and poetry. Teachers have their choice of texts to teach - short stories or a novel and poetry, which may or may not be related thematically.
Unit 2 helps students refine their own beliefs about what characteristics and what circumstances produce heroism.
Unit 3 provides students with an opportunity to explore Greek and Roman mythology.
Unit 4 focuses on how modern students demand relevance between their educational experiences and the world they live in. This unit is an opportunity to explore contemporary social issues that impact students.
English 8: In Unit 1, students read and analyze multiple literary texts representing at least two literary genres: prose, poetry or drama. While studying the literary texts, students examine each for various aspects of the author’s craft: characterization, setting, plot structure and development, use of figurative language, connections to historical context, and themes.
In Unit 2, this unit guides students to implement effective reading strategies for informational texts. Informational texts may include news articles, non-fiction narratives, instructional manuals, commentaries, op-ed essays, letters, and more. Each of these genres produce texts that are relatively short, allowing for multiple reads and extensive analysis.
In Unit 3, This unit guides students to implement effective reading strategies for informational texts.
In our final unit, Students read and analyze multiple literary texts representing at least two literary genres: prose, poetry or drama. While studying the literary texts, students examine each for various aspects of the author’s craft: characterization, setting, plot structure and development, use of figurative language, connections to historical context, and themes.
