Advance Dance
Course Overview
Dancers in this advanced class will develop a deeper understanding of the skills of technique, strength, flexibility, alignment, endurance, coordination and performance qualities (focus, confidence, artistic intent). They will have the opportunity to explore various genres of movement as well as incorporate the elements of dance to create their own movement vocabulary. Dancers will work to develop body awareness and kinesthetic awareness as we build flexibility, stamina, and muscle tone. They will also have an understanding of various dance genres, history, elements, and cultures while exploring dance as a means of expression. Dancers will have the opportunity to not only train their bodies but also examine and contextualize the historical and social underpinnings surrounding the WORLD of DANCE! Students will be able to experience training in Ballet, Hip Hop, Jazz, Improvisation, Composition and Modern/Contemporary dance. Students will also gain insight into Dance History and Dance Media/technology. To be literate in the arts, students need specific knowledge and skills in a particular arts discipline to a degree that allows for fluency and deep understanding. In dance, this means discovering the expressive elements of dance; knowing the terminology that is used to comprehend dance; having a clear sense of embodying dance; and being able to reflect, critique, and connect personal experience to dance. The dance curriculum at League is designed to reflect the National Standards for Dance Education and the S.C. Frameworks for Dance Education.
